Read our Tipico esports review for the lowdown on the German bookmaker

It may not be a familiar brand to some of you, but Tipico is actually one of the largest bookmaking chains in Germany. It focuses largely on European markets, and its main sponsorships are related to German and Austrian sport. It is possible to place esports bets with Tipico, with the operator having recognised the growth of esports and moved into the market over the last year or so. There are markets for anyone who wants to place a Dota 2, League of Legends, StarCraft II or CS:GO bet. However, our Tipico esports review found some issues with accessing markets and bonus offers on the UK version of the site, which makes Tipico something of a problematic choice for British customers who want to place esports bets. We’ve found both positive and negative points about this bookmaker when compiling our Tipico esports rating. Read on, as we take you through all the key aspects of this bookmaker’s offering to see how Tipico stacks up against the competition when it comes to esports betting. Is Tipico the right bookie for you? Our review aims to help you decide.

Interface & Design

Basic in design but could be more welcoming

With a stark white, red and grey colour scheme, the Tipico site is basic and useable enough. But, to be honest, it’s not the most welcoming site we’ve seen. Part of this is down to the restrictions the operator places on users from some jurisdictions, such as the UK. Once you’re on the homepage, it’s easy enough to find available markets. For esports bets, you need to scroll down the list on the left-hand side of the screen, open the ‘further groups’ menu, and scroll down until you reach esports, then click through to see the available bets. Whether you want to place a League of Legends or CS:GO bet, you’ll be able to access each market and select the odds. Overall, Tipico’s website is not the most appealing, nor the most slick and professional-looking out there. If you just want plain vanilla esports betting without all the fancy bells and whistles, Tipico might just suit you down to the ground. However, if you like your betting site to provide a bit more of an immersive and welcoming experience, there are better choices out there. As well as a main site, there are Tipico apps, covering the sportsbook and casino.

Welcome Bonus

Up €100 deposit match for new customers in some jurisdictions

There are several bonuses on offer at Tipico, for both new and existing customers. However, these are not accessible to all users. The main welcome bonus consists of a 100% deposit match, which is worth up to €100. As is often the case, using Neteller or Skrill to make your deposit renders you ineligible for the bonus. Before you can request a payout, you have to wager the total deposit funds, plus the bonus, three times. As wagering requirements go, this is fairly generous, so Tipico rates quite highly when it comes to new customer promotions. The bonus can be used on the sportsbook, so there doesn’t seem to be a restriction on using it for esports bets, so whether you want to get involved in League of Legends betting or place a Dota 2 bet, you can enjoy a boost as a new customer at Tipico.

There are further bonuses available at Tipico. These take the form of free bets, risk-free bets and deposit matches, and are applied to specific sports and events. At this time, there are no promotions specifically applicable to the esports market. It’s worth stating again that Tipico bonuses are restricted, which means our rating of this operator is low, compared to other sites that allow players from the UK and other countries to resister and wager on esports and other markets.

Payments

Limited payment and withdrawal methods at Tipico

Unfortunately, we find this operator lagging behind some of its competitors when it comes to the number of available payment methods. Visa and Mastercard are the two credit/debit card options at Tipico. Customers can also use a paysafecard to place their esports bets, while Tipico Pay is available to those customers who download and use the site’s mobile app. Customers can also use Skrill and Neteller to deposit and withdraw funds. A final option is bank transfer. The glaring omission on the operator’s list of payment options is PayPal, which is particularly strange when the site features a box inviting players to sign up and deposit using PayPal. When it comes to withdrawals, all the same options are available, except Tipico Pay. Overall, the list of payment options is quite limited. That being said, there are both card and e-wallet methods, so the majority of customers should be able to deposit and withdraw their funds using their preferred method. A further plus is that Tipico does not charge fees (although payment providers can impose charges that are beyond the control of the operator). The only exception is for bank transfers of less than €25. In terms of processing times, for deposits, it’s immediate, while withdrawals can take up to five days (but are immediate in many cases). With the exception of bank transfers, the minimum deposit/withdrawal is €10, while the maximums range from €400 to €100,000.

Esports Markets

More than just CS:GO and League of Legends at Tipico

We review plenty of sites that limit their esports betting to just Counter Strike, Dota 2, and League of Legends, so we were impressed to see that Tipico also covers StarCraft II. However, the number of events is somewhat limited at Tipico. Fans of League of Legends betting could recently place wagers on the NA LCS Spring Split, which featured teams like Team SoloMid and FlyQuest. For customers who want to bet on their DotA 2 heroes can place wagers on the Asia Championship. At the time of writing, there were no other DotA 2 ranking events on the site on which players could bet. If you want to place a CS:GO bet, you have a choice of CS:GO betting markets available at Tipico.

review league of legends

While the range may not be comprehensive, we have to give Tipico its due for bringing customers a wider choice than just CS:GO betting, DotA 2 betting and League of Legends betting. As esports continue to grow in popularity, among fans and bettors alike, hopefully Tipico (and other mainstream bookies) will take a look at the esports growth statistics and widen their offering to give users an even wider and deeper choice of markets.

Live Streaming

Disappointing in-play and streaming choices at Tipico

This is another aspect of Tipico which will be a disappointment to anyone who wants to place an esport bet. As far as we can tell, there are currently no in-play markets available for players at Tipico on esports. So, while you can place a CS:GO bet and also bet on League of Legends events, you can’t take part in the excitement of in-play. Perhaps Tipico will carry out some esports industry analysis soon and introduce this to their offering. Given the accessibility issues we’ve flagged up already, it is possible that in-play is available in some countries in which Tipico operates, so it’s worth checking out the site to see what’s available. The live options are listed next to each event. There is also no live streaming option. Many of the sites that do offer live streaming of traditional sports do not extend this service to esports, so we’re certainly not going to penalise Tipico on this aspect of the offering. However, overall, we were disappointed by the lack of in-play options available for esports at this operator and therefore we have awarded a low Tipico rating for this category.

Odds & Limits

Competitive odds
Once you have found the markets which are offered by Tipico for CS:GO bets and other esports markets, it’s easy to see the odds on offer. Users from some countries might be slightly confused by the fact that odds are presented in the decimal format. As Tipico is a German company, this should not be a surprise. This also has the advantage of making it simpler to compare odds, and to calculate winnings. At the time of writing, odds were being offered on both the winners of individual matches, and the overall winner of tournaments, such as the DotA Asia Championships.

Limits
When it comes to limits, Tipico sets a rather modest limit of €100,000 per week per customer as the maximum that any player can win. This limit also applies to the amount of winnings that can be won on any individual betting slip. While more than sufficient for most players, we have certainly seen higher limits available from other operators. The minimum amount that be placed on an esports bet, or on any bet, is €1 for single bets. The minimum on individual bets in an accumulator is €0.25. Up to 30 bets can be made on each betting slip.

Customer Service

Limited options with variable live chat facility

Our review highlights that customer service options at Tipico are quite limited. There is no phone line, and while the site claims that a live chat function is available, the times at which it is online are unclear. It is certainly not 24/7, as it is with many of Tipico’s rivals in the esports bet market. In order to contact customer services, your best bet is email. There is a contact form on the site. To access customer support, scroll to the bottom of the page to the ‘contact us’ link. You’ll also see options displayed on the right-hand side of the screen. Things look brighter for this operator when it comes to FAQs.

While maybe not the most attractively designed FAQ page, it certainly does the job when it comes to providing answers to common queries, from a problem with your esports bet to an issue with cashing out. Another thing working in Tipico’s favour is that, according to the FAQs, it is open to requests to add more markets to its current offering. Of course, there are no guarantees, but all you esports fans out there can at least ask for your favourite leagues and events to be included. Who knows? Maybe the folks at Tipico will agree!

Security & Licensing

Is Tipico safe for online esports gambling?

Tipico was founded back in 2004. It sponsors soccer clubs, Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig and SV Hamburg. The operator is also a partner of the Austrian Bundesliga, and Austrian football team, RB Salzburg. Former German international goalkeeper, Oliver Kahn, is the main ambassador for the brand. Its online operations employ around 6,000 people in 33 different countries. As well as online betting, Tipico operates shops on a franchise system in Germany, with around 750 betting shops located across the country. This suggests that this is a solid, well-established bookmaker that enjoys a strong reputation in the sporting world. The company is registered in Malta, and is licensed by its Lotteries and Gaming Authority. So, will your esport bet be safe at Tipico? It certainly seems so. In addition, the site uses SSL encryption to protect its customers, and, in 2012, implemented the use of an Information Security Management System, which complies with local German legislation. It has been awarded high ratings for the transfer and storage of sensitive data. If you want to bet on League of Legends and other esports markets at Tipico, your bet is secure, along with your personal details. So, to the question, ‘is Tipico safe?’, we’d have to says it is, and award it a high rating in this area.

Final Recommendations

Not the best esports site out there but still worth a look

It has to be said that there are more appealing places where you can place an esport bet than Tipico. While there is Dota 2 betting and CS:GO betting available and you can bet on League of Legends, Star Craft II and other markets, overall we found the variety to be quite limited. Hopefully, the operator will incorporate more games in esports soon to help it compete with other online bookies. Other negatives we found when conducting our review included the limited customer support service. One of the big downsides is the accessibility of this operator’s service, with UK customers left disappointed when trying to register. Of course, it’s not all bad news. On the plus side, this operator does offer a nice welcome bonus that is more generous than some we’ve come across. While we weren’t big fans of the starkly designed site, it is easy to navigate and to find available markets. There is a mobile offering too. Overall, we have to give Tipico plaudits for offering a platform on which we can bet on League of Legends, CS:GO and other markets. With a few improvements, and by opening up the site to customers from a wider range of countries, there’s no reason why Tipico can’t be among the best esports betting sites. For the time being, however, we have to award the operator a slightly disappointing rating.
