Valorant Esports & Game Overview Riot Games' Free-to-Play First-Person Hero Shooter
Valorant is Riot Games’ FPS supertitle set to compete with Valve’s Counter-Strike 2. Released in 2020, this game now serves millions in concurrent players, and in a (relatively) short period become one of the top esports titles on the market.
Stylistically, Valorant draws inspiration from both Counter-Strike and Overwatch, and as such is a natural choice for fans of both games. The game rewards both precise gunplay and creativity in movement and execution, in the most refined of styles.
Valorant is a completely online multiplayer experience, with the entirety of gameplay happening on live servers. The only way to play this game alone is in practice mode, shooting at static targets. Everything else happens against real opponents in real time.
Valorant Gameplay & Game ModesEverything you need to know about Valorant
Valorant is a team-based first-person shooter where players choose from a group of unique characters called Agents and compete in bomb-defusal style matches. Within the team, each agent will have unique abilities that will enable them to control choke points for competitive advantage. Outside of these incredible Agent abilities, Valorant is like others of its kind, with the usual selection of weaponry for players to choose from. Pistols, machine guns, or sniper rifles, choose your weapon with precision and aim for victory
In its standard competitive format, Valorant is based on 25-round matches, first to 13 structure similar to Counter-Strike 1.6. Some elements incorporate the same as Overwatch, or League of Legends in terms of Agent abilities, and the way they can be used strategically in a match.
Most of the current gameplay revolves around ranked play. Valorant ranks and competitive ranking were added in June 2020 with patch 1.02. More than 80% of active players compete in ranked play.
Valorant Maps
There are seven maps currently available in the Valorant map pool, which is available for competitive and ranked matches. They all follow the same in regards to stylistic components, and they’re all bomb defusal scenarios. Players will have to fight for their entry point, using the map to their best ability to gain an advantage. As of the latest update in June 2025, the maps include the following:
Corrode is the twelfth standard map for Valorant, which was officially revealed in June 2025. It joins the active duty map pool rotation alongside Bind, after Split and Pearl have been replaced. The map seems to blend both industrial elements and historical architecture, and is set in a rugged medieval French fortress on Omega Earth.
This is one of the most recognisable maps in Valorant, and if you can successfully navigate this map’s complexity, there’s no doubt you’ll be on the team that gains victory. It has become a fan favorite since it was released on initial release of Valorant. Its inspiration comes from the Italian city of Venice, but with this map, teamwork is key.
Although it’s been in the game since the very beginning, Bind remains a fan favorite among the gaming community. This map is filled with surprises, keeping the player engaged throughout the battle. You’ll need to know this map inside out if you want to be successful; it’s key. If you prefer a challenge to your game, Bind is the map for you.
Haven’s map includes three Spike plant locations rather than two, which changes the entire complexity of the game. All players must be able to work together to be successful on this map. It has two primary entrances: A long and A short. Complexity and strategy are the differences with this map, which set it different from the rest.
If you enjoy depending on how well you can aim? Then this map is definitely for you. Hours upon hours spent in Aimlabs practice mode would be worth your while after getting that victory. It’s a cold, snowy map, but has become one of the most challenging sites all because of its verticality of each spike site, and its horizontal zip lines.
Lotus is Valorant’s ninth map and is a plant-powered temple-like map that also shows three spike sites. It is known for being inspired by Indiana Jones, from its rotating doorways, and its deep lore roots. Its city’s mythical plant technology has been considered impressive by the community.
In 2023, VALORANT added the Sunset map to the game. This map is previous to many others, where players will need to put in hours to master it. Finding strategies to have the upper hand in matches will come to your advantage. The sunset map represents the city of L.A has certain cultural staples that’ll be noticeable to players.
Valorant EsportsRapidly Rising to the Pinnacle of Esports
Valorant has now become a staple in the esports scene. The highest tier of the competitive scene is run by Riot Games itself. In 2020, Riot Games launched its initial competitive tournament called “First Strike”. This was designed to establish a solid foundation for an esports scene to be created.
In 2023, Riot Games announced a partner teams model, competing on LAN in international leagues (EMEA, Americas, Pacific, and China. Alongside mid-season invitationals, with an annual world championship to close the season.
Furthermore, regional competitions also occur. These take place as qualifiers for the Ascension tournaments. Since its release, Riot Games has quickly admitted its plans to grow in the esports world, and it looks like they’ve stuck to their promise.
Currently, Valorant has asserted its place in the esports world, with a current place in the Esports World Cup for 2025. It has a $1,250,000 prize money and 1,000 club points for the winner.
Valorant Betting is Gaining MomentumPotentially the biggest market around
If we’re talking about betting on Valorant, it seems to draw on previous experiences from Counter-Strike. Because of its similarities between the two, Valorant’s transition into the betting world became much easier. Betting in 2025 provides fans with many different options to engage with the game. Several online esports betting sites offer fans the opportunity to bet on tournaments like the VCT. Within this, betting markets include:
- Pre-match markets (map/match winner)
- Proposition bets (total kills)
- Outright betting (teams that will reach the final/win the tournament)
- Live betting markets (dynamic odds reflecting the unfolding gameplay)
Our Experience in Valorant A word from the experts
We here at Esports.net have played Valorant since its release. We all have our own opinions on it, good and bad. However, it still provides us with lots of fun. One thing we like most about it is that it gives us a nostalgic feeling about the old Counter-Strike days.
With its similarities to Counter-Strike 2 (and perhaps a lower barrier to entry) Valorant is sure to be a go-to for many younger players. Now, Valorant is considered one of the ‘big three’ esports titles, in both esports betting volume and viewership.
