European Rocket League teams play for charity – Gamers Without Borders

The Gamers Without Borders 2022 is an invitational charity tournament, which features various esports titles. Rocket League, given how prominent the competitive scene, is no exception. Two regional events are played out North America and Europe with 750,000$ pledged to various charities. The top four teams at each event also get an invite to the event final in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The competition in NA conlcuded with Spacestation Gaming, Complexity Gaming, AllMidand Rogue securing their invites. It’s time for the Europe counterpart to kick off their own.

Gamers Without Borders 2022 Europe Qualifiers Format

The GWB 2022 Main Event features a double-elimination bracket Playoffs. All matches are best-of-five except the Upper Bracket Finals, Lower Bracket Finals, and the Grand Finals, which are best-of-seven.

That aside, the GWB 2022 features a rather unique order of matches. In a best-of-five, the first match will be a standard 3v3, but the second and third matches are either 1v1 or 2v2 (depending on the loser of game 1’s choice). Ideally, a prominent team will sweep the series in just three matches, however, it can go further with games 4 to 5 in a best-of-five (or up to 7 games in a best-of-seven). In which, the loser of game 3 gets to pick the game mode again, either 3v3 or the other mode unused from the previous game. The additional take on game modes opens up a strategy talk for teams to decide which player should be housed for 1v1 and 2v2 scenarios.

All the teams are in the “money” by just attending, and each will get to choose a charity to donate their winnings to. The actual competition is for the four spots leading into the main event.

GWB 2022 Europe Qualifiers Teams

With the open qualifiers concluded, the four candidates out of eight slots to make their entry are Guild Esports, Wolves Esports, Natus Vincere, and Juicers. Navi had a close game versus Team Liquid in the open qualifiers but eventually snatch the victory. The four teams with direct invites to this charity event are: Luminosity Gaming, Aogiri, Solary and SMPR Esports. Initially, 00 Nation was supposed to attend, but they couldn’t attend. Aogiri took their spot.

Solary, Guild , Wolves and Luminosity are our candidates for qualifying into the main event. However, it will definitely be a challenge to compete against the other four invitees.

Gamers Without Borders 2022 Main Event

The EU Qualifiers will end with the top four teams earning tickets to the GWB 2022 tournament with $2,000,000 at stake. That said, the EU and NA aren’t the only participants in the high-stake tournament as twenty-four teams will participate. For instance, four slots are reserved for the Saudi eLeagues 2022, where the MENA regional teams shall compete. Nevertheless, qualifier teams only make up half of the total participants, as sixteen more unannounced invitees are still pending. Once again, there’s a high likelihood that GWB2022 has the top-ranking teams on RLCS 2021-22 Rankings to participate.

Potential EU Invitees for the GWB 2022 Main Event

After this event concludes, another 16 teams will earn direct invites into the final in Riyadh. We expect Team BDS, Team Queso, Dignitas, Endpoint CeX, Evil Geniuses or Team Vitality to earn their invite in this way.  We recently saw how Queso climbed the rankings in just one successful major run, namely the Winter Split Major. Hence, it wouldn’t be too surprising if GWB2022 invites them. Besides that, Team BDS, currently first-place, is a promising candidate too.

Regardless, it’s still anyone’s guess on which team will get the invite. Since the Spring Regional Event and Major are occupying days in July, chances are, most of the confirmed participants for the Spring Major might opt out.

Another question that many were pondering is whether we will expect any direct invites from the APAC and Oceania regions. After all, the Gamers Without Borders 2022, as its name suggests, gathers candidates from all regions to participate on the same floor.
