LoL Esports & Game OverviewLeague of Legends: The Most Popular MOBA In The World

Despite coming after other titles in the MOBA genre, League of Legends has risen to become the leading esport, generating millions of players daily, and around 117 million active players monthly. The game’s developers and publisher, Riot Games, drew inspiration from Defence of the Ancients, a popular mod for Blizzard Entertainment’s Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. Riot took that original idea and ran with it, becoming the dominant force in the MOBA genre

League of Legends Esports is streamed on YouTube and Twitch, and is often amongst the most watched titles in the industry. Even today, the game is still breaking viewership records year upon year, with the 2025 Mid-Season Invitational being the most watched tournament since its inception with over 3.4 million viewers. These tournaments bring together fans from across the world, encouraging those to bring their energy to the arena. On top of that, cosplays are all the rage in League of Legends as fans spend hundreds of hours perfecting their costumes ahead of the big event.

Join us as we explore the wonderful world that is League of Legends, highlighting the core gameplay of this MOBA, along with its modes, concepts, and finally what makes this game such a joy for millions of players.

League of Legends Gameplay & Game ModesImmerse yourself in the LoL Universe

A standard game of League of Legends is played from a top-down perspective, using the right-mouse button, players control a champion, a character that you will use in a game of LoL. These champions all have unique abilities and playstyles that will provide fun for each player. Throughout a game, champions will gain experience, earn gold, and craft powerful items that will aid them on their path to taking down the enemy’s Nexus.

Although there will be many twists and turns along the way, the main core objective in a game of League of Legends remains the same, to destroy the core of the enemies base – the Nexus. Each Nexus is protected by defensive structures (towers and inhibitors), so it can take players anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour to take the win.

The setting for this game is based in the heart of Runeterra, with every champion having a deep connection to this land. Over the years, Riot has done a tremendous job fleshing out the regions of Runeterra, with some of them featuring in the highly popular animated Netflix series, Arcane Champions are connected with rich history in the League of Legends lore, these connections are field by hatred, love, and everything in between. It’s worth noting that the main League of Legends narrative was rebooted in 2014 after its original lore became too limiting for complex storytelling.

League of Legends Champions

Everything in League of Legends revolves around the champions that makes this all possible. Your team needs to have the right collection of champions to make what is called a team composition. Players will pick champions that they believe will give them the best opportunity to win the game. Sometimes you will need more range, other times you will need  a champion that can soak up the pressure, there are many ways to tackle a game of League of Legends.

There are six main champion types in League of Legends:

Marksmen

Marksmen, also known as AD Carries, are the late game specialists with a ton of range. Left unchecked and they will carve through your team like a hot knife to butter. The latest champion, Yunara, is an ADC, and right now they are one of the strongest champions in the game, consistently picked in professional play and in solo queue. Yunara’s ultimate, Transcend One’s Self, gives her abilities an upgrade, making for a rather strong champion. The only downside to ADC’s is that they are squishy, and rely on positioning to be useful. They are glass cannons, so there is a risk and reward situation when playing them.

Mages

Mages, also known as AP Carries, are a jack of all trades. Just as their name suggests, they are the controllers in this game, and a strong Mage can be the difference between defeat and victory. They have a lot of range, and can take out enemies from what players call ‘a screen away’. Take Lux for example, the majority of her abilities are long range poke, and if you get caught up in them, you are as good as dead. In the late game, her stun and ultimate combination can wipe out a squishy target in less than a second.

Assassins

Assassins are the ones that bring the most chaos to the game. One second you think you are fine farming minions, the next you are in the death screen wondering where it all went wrong. Assassins are true to their name in League of Legends, they enjoy a good hunt, and their kits are designed at eliminating their target in the blink of an eye before anyone can even react. Talon, for example, is an assassin that can hop over walls, and one shot people with his ultimate (which has invisibility), before they have a chance to react. They have to be constantly on the move to be useful.

Tanks

Tanks are one of the primary defenses for the team. They are the ones that soak up the majority of the damage and are imperative to a team’s victory in LoL. However, just because they are as slow as slugs, that doesn’t mean they should be ignored. You’ll often find that tanks are some of the highest damage dealers on the team. Give an Ornn an advantage and he will take care of business without the need for his carries. Tanks are deceptive, they look big and slow, but they often pack the hardest punch.

Bruisers

Bruisers are a hybrid between a tank and a damage dealer. Take Darius, for example, he will often build bruiser items that provide him with health, but the much needed damage to remain useful in fights. Darius will have enough health so that he is not killed off quickly, but hits as hard as primary damage dealers.

Supports

Supports are the backbone of a team composition in League of Legends. They provide the needed healing, shielding, and also block incoming attacks. They are the shield that guards the champions. Braum, for example, can throw up his shield to block incoming CC and auto attacks, which is why it is always wise to ‘stand behind Braum.’ Support, like Jungle, has some of the most variance in the game. You can play just about anything in Support! Just not Teemo. Please not Teemo.

Core Gameplay

League of Legends is all about resource management, you need gold in order to get items, and you earn gold through a variety of ways. Whether that is farming minions, destroying towers, or by simply killing your opponent, you have to do one of these three things if you wish to earn your items much quicker in League of Legends. The best players constantly track their mana pools and ability cooldowns as well as the mana pools and ability cooldowns of their opponents to pinpoint the exact moment when they can go in for the kill. Not all champions are like that, however. For example, Vladimir has a different resource to manage. Whenever Vladimir uses an ability, he loses a percentage of health. Don’t worry, he can get it back easily, but Vlad players have to rely on cooldown management as they don’t have to worry about mana.

When a player loses their life, they are sent back to the Fountain, where they must wait for a certain amount of time before rejoining the fight back at base. The higher level you are, the longer that death timer will be. Losing your life just before an objective spawns could be the difference between a victory, or a defeat, so be diligent about the play you want to make if an objective like Baron or Dragon is close to spawning.

A champions class and abilities determine which role they will play in League of Legends. There are currently five roles in League of Legends. Top Lane, Jungle, Mid Lane, ADC, and Support. An ADC is too squishy to ideally be in a lane by themselves, so an ADC and Support are often paired as a bottom lane duo, this lane is placed at the bottom of the map, the closest to the Dragon pit. Classes aren’t bound to a single role, however, from time to time the ADC’s can appear in the top lane.

Game modes

There are several game modes in League of Legends, with the most common, and the most popular being Summoners Rift.

Summoners Rift

This is the map that players know and love. The mode sees two teams of five battle to the death with the one goal in mind, to destroy the enemy nexus. This is the only way to achieve victory outside of one team forfeiting. No matter how many kills you or the enemy team gets, they still have to take down the nexus to win the game. There are three paths (or lanes) to this objective, and each of them is guarded by enemy turrets, inhibitors, and AI-controlled minions. Between these paths, there’s a vast jungle that’s home to plants and neutral monsters. Players can interact with the jungle to gain extra resources and capture important secondary objectives like Elemental Dragons and Baron Nashor to pave the road to victory.

Howling Abyss (ARAM)

This is as simple as it gets. All Random, All Mid. Two teams of five battle to the death down one lane. This is one of the best time passers in League of Legends if you want to avoid the hustle and bustle of Summoners Rift. Unlike with Summoner’s Rift, the only way to go back to your base is to die in combat, so ARAM games tend to get real bloody real fast. Another thing to note is that each player has a random champion assigned to them to avoid scenarios where players only pick the best teamfighters for their ARAM matches.

Teamfight Tactics (TFT)

Although it is under the League of Legends banner, and started out as a smaller gamemode, TFT has taken on a life of its own, and stands just as proud next to traditional League of Legends. The community is thriving, and with each set, the game is only getting bigger and bigger. The only common traits between the two games is that it shares the same client, and has League of Legends champions on their board. Teamfight Tactics is an 8-player autobattler where each player is playing for themselves. The goal is simple: remain the last one standing. However, achieving it requires players to recruit the right champions, determine where to position them on the battlefield and use gold and items to set their troops up for success. Afterwards, champions will engage in AI-controlled combat, and the players that did the best prep work will come out on top.

Ultra Rapid Fire (URF)

Ultra Rapid Fire is a seasonal game mode played on Summoners Rift where all champions get to use their abilities more often and matches usually last 20 minutes or less. All players start the game with an aura that adds many adjustments to how the game is played. The two main highlights are 300 Ability haste, (equivalent to 75% cooldown reduction), and the removal of all mana and energy costs from using abilities. The game mode alternates between All Random and Blind Drafts, depending on which one Riot would like to run. This mode is limited, and was originally linked to April Fool’s.

League of Legends EsportsExperience LoL Esports at its Pinnacle

League of Legends is one of the biggest Esports in the industry. The game attracts millions of followers each year, with Worlds and MSI continuing to break viewership records, along with attracting the biggest stars to perform at their events such as Linkin Park, New Jeans, and more.

Competitive games consist of two five-member teams battling each other on a map known as Summoner’s Rift. That’s not to say that LoL is all about fighting as a unit. A League of Legends match can be separated into three distinct parts (early game, mid game, late game), and each of these parts gives players ample opportunities to show off their skill, set up tactical manoeuvres, and battle for secondary objectives.

A number of tournaments occupy central places on the League of Legends calendar. One of these is the World Championship (Worlds), which has been held every year since 2011. Fnatic won the first title at DreamHack, and since then, every professional player dreams of winning Worlds and engraving their name in LoL Esports history.

One team reigns above all when it comes to the number of World Championships accumulated, and that is T1. Alongside the greatest player of all time in Faker, T1 (formerly SKT),  has won five World Championships, with no other team having more than one Worlds title to their name, which isn’t a bad feat by any standards. The tournament is extremely difficult to win, with the knockout stage being a single-elimination bracket. While fans churn for double-elimination, Riot has stood firm with high-stakes entertainment being a core value of Worlds.
