Overwatch is changing Anran’s face, as promised, but you may have to squint to notice the update

Overwatch gave us five new heroes in Season 1, which was pretty exciting. While the game has seen a massive resurgence in the past few months, there has been an ongoing debate over Anran’s generic appearance.
Portrayed as a lot more aggressive, bold, and unique in a comic appearance, fans were shocked when Anran entered the game as yet another skinny, child-like, big-eyed character. Overwatch and other shooters have been getting a lot of backlash lately regarding the use of generic hot women, and Anran’s underwhelming appearance didn’t help.
Almost immediately, developers led by Aaron Keller promised they were looking into a change for Season 2. Now, the new look has been revealed. And gamers are… Still underwhelmed.
Overwatch community not impressed with Anran changes
Keller admitted on X that the team “didn’t quite land” the concept of a unique character when Anran was first released. The original version was “too innocent and playful” when she was supposed to be “confident, determined, fierce, and a natural born leader.”
To make her in-game appearance match her personality, developers focused on her eyes, eyebrows, and mouth. They wanted her features to seem more sincere and mature.
Welp… Here it is.

As you can see, her eyebrows are slightly more narrowed? I think? And her eyes are not as wide. Blizzard claimed that they gave her a smirk and a more focused gaze. Her mouth and jaw are “slightly wider.” I can sorta see what they’re saying, but it still doesn’t really match the edgy appearance that gamers were hoping for.
Keller stated: “We’re really happy with the way these changes turned out. She has a closer resemblance to her brother Wuyang.”
I think it’s better than nothing. Of course, it’s nothing revolutionary. She’s still very thin, very feminine, and blandly pretty. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it would have been nice to see her look a bit more angular and aggressive like her comic did.

Some gamers were fine with the changes, however. In fact, they didn’t want any changes to begin with. They mocked the people who expressed annoyance with the minimal changes, claiming they will never be happy unless she is ugly.
Either way, it’s all better than nothing. I guess?
Five more heroes are coming in 2026. Keller said the team wants them to “feel true to who they are” and the team will take inspiration from this process with Anran. These next heroes will hopefully feel more authentic.
