The 2022 Asian Games are a historical edition of the multi-sporting competition as it’s the first time esports are being included as a medal sport. Seven esports titles had been selected to be played in the competition, with medals from here getting added to the country’s overall tally.
The Asian Games were initially supposed to be held in September 2022 but were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in China.
While the Asian Games are a matter of glory, for some the stakes are even higher, as South Korean players didn’t just go into the tournament to win the competition, but also potentially earn exemption from the country’s compulsory 18 months of military service of every able-bodied man between 18 and 28 years old. An Asian Games gold medal would earn them an exemption from service, though.

While only 21 medals across seven games were given out, one game from the competition was removed. This is Hearthstone. Initially selected as a discipline in the Asian Games 2022 after being a demonstration sport in 2018, the game was later not played. This is because earlier this year, Blizzard and NetEase ended their 14-year partnership which saw the latter publish the game in the country.
As a result, the Asian Games organizers announced the cancelation of the game as an officially listed esports medal event.
