It’s a subjective question for sure, as there are plenty of people out there who will declare that Assassin’s Creed isn’t worth the time of day. However, millions of players, a history stretching almost twenty years, and dozens of games must count for something. It’s arguably Ubisoft’s flagship franchise at this point, as it typically outsells the likes of Ghost Recon and Far Cry, and it’s why the developer and publisher has invested so much into the franchise’s future.
Assassin’s Creed promotes freedom and the ability to explore vast, open worlds – and it always has. It’s a customisable, exciting game that always features an immersive, far-stretching story, and what’s more, it’s almost always a true story – to some extent, anyway. It features real people, real places, and real events, and it quite literally permits the player to tweak history.
In the most recent Assassin’s Creed titles, we’ve seen gargantuan worlds bursting at the seams with potential. If you’re playing an Assassin’s Creed game, you’re in it for the long run, and by the time you’re done, you’ll likely feel such a strong connection with the protagonist, you’ll want to experience it all over again. That’s the staying power of Assassin’s Creed, and it’s why so many people wonder which Assassin’s Creed game is the best – they want the best experience imaginable.

It’s very hard to rank the series from best to worst, but someone has to declare which Assassin’s Creed game is the best, right? In lieu of a complete ranking – because that will change over time, for sure – we’ll bring you a ranking of the 5 best Assassin’s Creed games ever made, with everything else falling by the wayside.

The culmination of the iconic Ezio trilogy, Assassin’s Creed Revelations takes the legendary assassin to Constantinople, where he must expand the Brotherhood further around the world. Altaïr returns from the first game, too, bringing his story full circle for a proper conclusion.
For our money, Revelations is the fifth-best Assassin’s Creed game in the franchise to date. It didn’t innovate as much as Assassin’s Creed 2 or Brotherhood, and perhaps was too cautious in its changes. Regardless, it’s still an incredibly fun game to play long after its release, earning its place among the best Assassin’s Creed games.

When Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag was first released in 2013, it shook up the series’ formula in a way that hadn’t been seen for years. This swashbuckling adventure is more pirate game than Assassin’s Creed, but it’s so good that you don’t even think about it. Here, ship-based exploration and combat take center stage, as you sail the West Indies as pirate Edward Kenway on the customizable ship, the Jackdaw.
The ship mechanics were so solid that they remain similar across the modern titles in the series. For us, it stands as the fourth-best Assassin’s Creed game of all time – it’s just a shame it never got a true sequel.

2010’s Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood captures everything that’s great about the series. It’s the middle game in the Ezio trilogy, innovating on many of the features established in Assassin’s Creed 2. Rome never looked so good, as Ezio begins to establish the Italian Assassin’s Brotherhood. It’s a remarkable piece of work that represents everything you could want from a sequel.
As well as the single-player innovations, Brotherhood is also the first Assassin’s Creed game to feature multiplayer. This allowed players to test their stealth skills against others for the first time in the series’ history. To this day, Brotherhood remains among the best Assassin’s Creed games ever made, and of the Ezio trilogy, it probably plays the best in the modern day.

When asking which Assassin’s Creed is the best, you can’t ignore Assassin’s Creed Origins. It was a true rebirth for the Assassin’s Creed franchise, bringing it into a new era of RPG gameplay. As Bayek of Siwa, you explore a beautiful rendition of Ancient Egypt. Traverse the dunes, plunder a pyramid – the world really is your oyster.
Assassin’s Creed Origins at second place on this list is a no-brainer. Arguably the best game world in the series to date, the most interesting protagonist since Ezio, and perhaps the most gripping narrative the franchise has ever produced. Not to mention the successful change to an entirely new genre, Assassin’s Creed Origins is a triumph. We’ll even give it a pass for the regressed parkour.

That’s right: it falls to 2009’s Assassin’s Creed II to secure the trophy. This legendary game changed the paradigm for open-world adventure games, introducing so many fresh elements to the Assassin’s Creed series that were groundbreaking and innovative – and it was only just getting started. It brought into light Ezio Auditore, who is recognized today as one of the most impactful figures in the history of gaming.
He would go on to have three core games to his name, and he’d be referenced or make appearances in almost every other game in the series. In Assassin’s Creed II, players are presented with an immersive, emotional story that they genuinely feel connected to, and it’s lengthy and sizeable enough to really get their teeth stuck into it. From smooth combat to great parkour and from a diverse world, to some iconic AC quotes, Assassin’s Creed II really is the GOAT.
It’s settled: Assassin’s Creed II is the best Assassin’s Creed game of all time – you heard it here. But what about the other games? Let’s quickly cobble together a swift breakdown.
It can be argued that the worst Assassin’s Creed game was Unity, considering how broken it was at launch, but it honestly recovered and became something great. For some, the modern Assassin’s Creed titles are the worst because they’re so different – but again, as games, they’re truly great. For most people, the worst Assassin’s Creed game of all time is Assassin’s Creed III, with many feeling that Connor Kenway simply made a poor protagonist.
But it was one of my favorite titles in the series!
If I’m being honest and subjective, then the original Assassin’s Creed game, released in 2007, is the worst one in the series. That’s purely for the reason that it was limited, some features were little more than an afterthought, and it didn’t have the scope that the later games would come to have. That’s dramatically obvious, of course, but it’s just a limiting factor that makes it shine much less than the later titles.
