Even though he’s not that popular in solo queue, Amumu is still a pain to deal with in specific team compositions. Not only is he incredibly tanky but he also comes with lots of crowd controls and the ability to turn a teamfight upside down with his ultimate. This guide will go over the three best counters so you know how to win more against him.

Taliyah is the ultimate Amumu counter. Not only is she strong in the current meta and a flexible pick but she also counters engaging champions like Amumu with her kit. Amumu will receive so much damage every time he tries to get a pick that he won’t be able to survive.

If you want something with more carry potential than Taliyah, look no further than Lillia. She has a strong jungle clear that allows her to gain more resources compared to Amumu and her damage and mobility makes it hard for Amumu to pin her down.
For those who don’t like playing AP champions in the jungle, Warwick is a great option to counter Amumu. He has so much sustain that there is no way for Amumu to fight skirmishes and small fights but on top of that, it’s easy for Warwick to track the enemy jungler thanks to his W. If you have enough damage across other roles, Warwick is a good champion to improve the frontline.
Viego needs to dish out damage with his auto attacks but he’s never able to do that against Amumu since he will just stun him to death. Whether it’s the Q or ultimate, Viego will stay stationary long enough to be shut down by the enemy team. Avoid this matchup at all costs.

Even though Jarvan IV has better map presence compared to Amumu early on, I’m still not sold on this matchup. J4 is usually picked in team comps that want to engage and all-in onto the enemy team but Amumu perfectly counters that with his own ultimate. On top of that, Jarvan IV will never have enough damage to kill Amumu since he will just face tank everything coming at him.
When going up against Amumu, it’s recommended to build armor penetration and magic penetration. Below is a list of items to build you should consider, based on the class of champion you’re playing:
The three best counters are Taliyah, Lillia, and Warwick. Other strong counters are Karthus, Zac, and Kindred.
Lee Sin doesn’t counter Amumu strictly since the latter has several tools to lock down the Blind Monk. That said, Lee Sin is generally stronger in the first minutes of the game and has an easier time finding opportunities to snowball the game. It comes down to who can be more proactive and help the team build leads.
