Irelia counters in LoL – the top three picks
Irelia was to me one of the most successful reworks Riot brought to LoL. Not only did they make her visually more appealing but they were also able to make her kit feel satisfying by incorporating a lot of skill expression. A strong Irelia player can outplay opponents to the point where you will be wondering whether she’s broken or not. If you’re a part of those players, check out the best Irelia counters you should be playing this season.
If you’re fairly new to the game, check out our guide on how counter picks work in League of Legends. You will understand why counter picks are important, and how you need to take advantage of them to increase your win rate. Make sure to also understand how classes counter one another in LoL so you always know what to pick in each game.
Sett – the easy counter
Sett has a very simple kit and he happens to be one of the best when it comes to beating Irelia. His kit is specifically designed to go up against melee champions that want to all-in you and Irelia falls right into that category. The enemy player can throw everything at you and all you have to do is build up Grit and hit W right into her face. Wait until her Q goes on cooldown and try to weave in auto attacks when she dashes into to last hit. Unless you misplay heavily, you should be able to win.
Jax – it’s time to duel
Jax’s main advantage in this matchup is his ability to dodge several auto attacks in the trades with his counter strike. On top of that, he should prevail in extended skirmishes thanks to the passive. The only way Irelia can win is if she’s able to bait out Jax’s E and stack up her own passive at the start of the fight. It’s not likely to happen, and that is why Jax is considered a big Irelia counter.

Malphite – rock solid
Unlike the first two champions in this list, Malphite doesn’t need to win the laning phase to get an advantage. All he has to do is stack up more and more armor throughout the game, to the point where Irelia won’t be able to deal any damage. A small tip for you: prioritize maxing E first to further reduce Irelia’s attack speed and lower her damage in the trades.
Worst Irelia counters
Quinn – too mobile for her
While Quinn is typically strong against melee champions, Irelia’s mobility is far too high for her to handle. The latter can dash in out and as long as she manages to hit Sweeping Blades on her target, she will be able to take you down.
Teemo – the same concept
Similar to Quinn, Teemo struggles with the same issue. A decent Irelia player is expected to be able to get onto Teemo’s face: it doesn’t matter whether the yordle has the blinding effect since she will have enough damage to kill you anyway.
How do you counter Irelia with the items?
When going up against Irelia, it’s recommended to stack armor to reduce her DPS. Below is a list of items to build you should consider, based on the class of champion you’re playing:
- Bruisers: Bramble’s Vest, Warden’s Mail, Frozen Heart
- AD assassins: Guardian’s Angel
- ADC champions: Guardian’s Angel
- AP champions: Zhonya’s Hourglass
- Tanks: Bramble’s Vest, Warden’s Mail, Frozen Heart
What Champion counters Irelia?
The three best counters are Sett, Jax, and Malphite. Other strong counters are Yasuo, Tryndamere and Gwen.
Does Fiora counter Irelia?
The Fiora-Irelia is mainly a skill matchup, although it’s slightly in the former’s favor. This is because she can easily parry Irelia’s ultimate or E and has enough tools to duel with her most of the time. Irelia typically spikes better after completing the first time but the time window of opportunity to snowball is quite small. Later in the game, Fiora should prevail thanks to her true damage and sustain from the passive and ultimate.
