Black Ops 6 Campaign is a ‘Spy Thriller’ Set in the 1990s

Expectations were shattered today during the Black Ops 6 reveal. For the longest time, fans were convinced that it would be a game centred around the Gulf War, but now that the game has been unveiled by Activision Blizzard, we can confirm that’s just one small part of the project. In the trailers posted to showcase Black Ops 6’s campaign, we came to learn that it’s an action-packed spy-thriller title set in the 1990s, featuring a range of new and returning Black Ops characters.

Black Ops 6 will be released globally on October 25, landing on day one on Microsoft’s Game Pass service, which is a franchise first. The campaign is shaping up to be something remarkable, with years of effort being poured into the creation of a multi-faceted and relatively open-ended adventure. Following the end of the Cold War, players are plunged into a classic Black Ops campaign, but this time around, it’s a no-holds-barred experience that’s bursting at the seams with heart-pounding, show-stopping moments.

Black Ops 6’s Campaign Look Stunning

In a detailed breakdown by Treyarch and Raven Software, we got our first look at the Black Ops 6 campaign – and it looks stellar. From the frozen wastes of Siberia to an ostentatious casino in Southern Europe, players are invited on another globe-trotting Call of Duty experience, fighting wrongdoers worldwide. It was confirmed that Black Ops 6 is set after the end of the Cold War the ‘flashback sequences’ seen in 2012’s Black Ops II – so it’s not a direct follow-on from 2020’s Black Ops Cold War, despite the description.

It’s not an open-world title, which was the assumption, but instead, it’ll follow a similar structure to recent games, with players being presented with semi-open environments to explore. That being said, the game offers plenty in the way of a sandbox approach, with players being invited to take on missions as and when they see fit. The ‘evidence board’ mechanic from Cold War is making a grand return, but it has been tweaked to accommodate an evolution, of course.

Here’s the full Black Ops 6 reveal:

With all-new movement mechanics and a fresh take on the existing Call of Duty engine, Black Ops 6 looks unique enough to pass muster. It promises to be an exciting campaign, but nobody knows how long it’ll last just yet. Last year’s campaign in Modern Warfare 3 was the shortest in series history, clocking in a measly duration of just three or four hours. There are high hopes that Black Ops 6 will have much more meat on the bones.

Prepare for Battle

Black Ops 6 will be released globally on October 25, and before it drops, a beta period will be rolled out by Activision Blizzard. In August, the typical Call of Duty NEXT showcase will take place, fully revealing the game’s multiplayer platform. Until then, there’s plenty to digest from the campaign trailer and breakdown, including the characters, the mysteries wrapped up in the story, and the setting.

If you’re eager, you can pre-order Black Ops 6 now on all platforms.
