CDL Underdogs Take Down Titans as Major IV Approaches
This weekend in the Call of Duty League, some unsuspecting teams secured victories over the most skilled squads in the COD esports landscape. It was a weekend loaded with twists, and it started with Atlanta FaZe only just beating the Carolina Royal Ravens. As the weekend pushed on, Vegas Legion dished out a 3 – 0 win over the New York Subliners, and then the Minnesota Rokkr decimated OpTic Texas. It was one of the most unpredictable weekends in recent CDL history.
As this is the final Major before the COD Championship takes place in Texas, every point matters. There’s a lot of traffic around the relegation line in the CDL standings, with the Los Angeles Guerrillas, the Royal Ravens, Vegas Legion, Minnesota Rokkr, LA Thieves, and Miami Heretics all sitting within 30 points of one another. Presently, Vegas, Carolina, LAG, and Boston won’t be making it to COD Champs, but this upcoming Major could seriously change some fortunes.
Everything to Play For
Every year in the Call of Duty League, only the top eight teams will make it through to the playoffs. This is where the million-dollar prize sits, and it’s where players pick up their Championship rings and ink their names in the history books. Last year, the team to take the top prize was the New York Subliners, securing the win in a historic fashion over Toronto Ultra. It was the fastest-ever grand final in recent COD esports history, with the Subliners washing Ultra with a 5 – 0 scoreline.
Right now, the power players are well-established per the standings:
- Atlanta FaZe
- OpTic Texas
- Toronto Ultra
- New York Subliners
FaZe might be ahead in points, but OpTic Texas’ win at the recent Major III tournament caused the team to leap up the standings. Remember: the points gained at this stage determine the seeding for COD Champs, but even going into the lower bracket doesn’t mean you can’t win the ultimate prize.
This weekend proved one thing, and that’s that the underdog teams aren’t giving up their title shot without a fight. In the most stunning result we’ve seen in months, Vegas Legion – currently sitting below the qualification line – beat the Subliners almost effortlessly, producing a sweep that left New York sitting in the dust. Then out of nowhere, Rokkr defeated OpTic Texas in a series that went to the very wire – a game five, round eleven finish.
They worked hard for those ten CDL points.
We’ve got two weekends left of qualifying fixtures before Major IV rolls around. Unfortunately, this Major will take place behind closed doors, much to the chagrin of the community. After that, COD Champs will be deployed in full force in Texas, hosted by OpTic and boasting a $2.3 million prize pool. That’ll play out between the 18th and 21st of July, so there isn’t all that long to wait.
