Modern Warfare 3 Details Revealed for Esports World Cup
It has just been announced that Modern Warfare 3 will surface at the Esports World Cup in Riyadh. This landmark event marks the rise of the most valuable and diverse tournament in esports history, boasting a prize pool worth more than $60 million. It’ll play host to more than a dozen esports games, and it was recently revealed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is one of those games. Between August 15 – 18, 16 COD teams will compete for a prize pool of $1.8 million.
It hasn’t been confirmed how the team structure will work, but it’s widely assumed that there will be a qualification path that’ll see anyone throw their hat in the ring. It has been claimed on social media that four Call of Duty League teams will enter the fray, but given exclusivity clauses in the terms and conditions of the CDL charter, nobody understands how that can happen.
Big Money
Recently, it was claimed that Toronto Ultra, Atlanta FaZe, Minnesota Rokkr, and the LA Thieves would be breaking into the Esports World Cup on the MW3 stage. It’s tough to see how that’ll work, but it’s likely the teams will ‘rebrand’ temporarily and field their typical teams to have a chance at winning the grand prize at the event. For instance, Atlanta FaZe could field a FaZe Clan team and just use the four-man roster that represents the label in the Call of Duty League.
Minnesota Rokkr is now owned by G2 Esports, so that’s an avenue, and the LA Thieves is a 100 Thieves squad. Toronto Ultra is the only outlier with no clear path into the EWC.
Organisations are eager to field as many teams across as many esports games as possible, thanks to the Club Championship. At the Esports World Cup, a whopping $20 million has been set aside for the Club Championship, which will see organisations win up to $7 million for winning titles across multiple games. Here are the details on how Modern Warfare 3’s appearance at the Esports World Cup will work:
Group Stage
- 16 Teams in 4 Groups
- Double-Elimination, Best-of-Five
- Top 2 Teams Advance to the Playoffs
Playoffs
- 8 Teams
- Single Elimination, Best-of-Five
- Best-of-Seven Final
Everyone is now waiting with bated breath to see what happens team-wise in the Esports World Cup. It could be a relatively exhilarating event, and it’ll land mere weeks after this year’s Call of Duty League Championship. Here’s a scenario: FaZe is the favourite to win COD Champs this year – could the team win Champs and then push into the Esports World Cup and win that event just weeks later? That would be a moment for the history books.
