It was another busy weekend in the Call of Duty League, but some interesting events unfolded over the last few days. As per the typical CDL fashion, a slew of matches took place that were almost impossible to predict, but some fixtures ended up blowing fans away entirely. The New York Subliners failed to secure a win in either of its matches this weekend, falling short against Seattle Surge and the Carolina Royal Ravens, which is not what everyone was expecting when the weekend kicked off.
Elsewhere, OpTic Texas found its feet again following the loss against Atlanta FaZe at Major II, picking up a 6 – 0 record over Vegas Legion and Seattle Surge. There was something of a total shake-up amongst the power players at the top of the table, with Toronto Ultra falling flat against Atlanta FaZe and the LA Thieves storming up the stage’s standings board.
The CDL’s reigning champions, NYSL, put up a fight this weekend but it wasn’t enough to overcome Seattle Surge and the Carolina Royal Ravens. It was something of a vengeance fixture for the Royal Ravens, as it was the New York Subliners that eliminated Carolina from Major II’s big-money tournament. The final round of this five-map fixture was an utter breakdown for the Subliners, as the reigning champs went 1 – 6 against Royal Ravens, a team that’s getting more capable with time.
This monumental victory allowed the Royal Ravens’ Gwinn to secure a new all-time high kill record in the CDL, landing 112 kills in a single series.
Seattle Surge also had its way against the New York Subliners. In recent weeks, Seattle Surge dismissed iLLeY and Arcitys in favour of a more rookie-focused squad, bringing in the likes of 04 and Breszy – a move that’s paying off over time.
OpTic Texas was the only team to secure a perfect record this weekend. Despite a huge loss at Major II in the grand final, OpTic Texas remains a team able to secure effortless traction. The synergy is looking insane, especially between Pred and Shotzzy, and every time the team plays, they look as though they’re having the time of their lives. That chemistry is pulling through to the game, and there are still high expectations that the squad will lift a trophy this season.
One of the most stunning results of the weekend was Atlanta FaZe’s 3 – 0 win over Toronto Ultra. It wasn’t even a close win – FaZe wiped the floor with Toronto, barely allowing the squad room to breathe in every round of the series. Toronto Ultra looked like a bottom-table team against Atlanta FaZe, which still boasts the number-one spot in the CDL standings by a mile. That win came just one week after FaZe dealt OpTic Texas and Minnesota Rokkr immense losses of their own.
It’s hard to predict what’ll unfold in Toronto when the Major III tournament wraps up, but all eyes are on OpTic Texas and Atlanta FaZe for the top spot.
In more recent news, it was confirmed that CDL Champs 2024 will be held by OpTic Texas in the team’s home state.
