G2 Snax at IEM Cologne: “I do a bit more stupid things because I think I can.”

G2 found themselves in the IEM Cologne quarter-finals after demolishing their opposition in Group A’s Lower Bracket. We got to speak with Janusz “Snax” Pogorzelski ahead of their match with MOUZ, which resulted in elimination from the tounament.

Bruno: Congratulations on getting to the quarter-finals. You had a difficult start with the defeat to SAW.

What happened in that match that they surprised so much?

Snax: I think it was the first match, we weren’t really warmed up for the match with SAW. Maybe we approached it a bit too confident and there wasn’t the energy that was needed for a match at such a tournament and I think the guys also played well against SAW. They countered some things that we had well. So they deserve applause for how they played. I think that’s all really.

Bruno: And then in the lower bracket you destroyed everyone.

Were you surprised by how easy it was, especially with Spirit?

Snax: I think it didn’t really surprise me because we had already shown good results in Riyadh or at BLAST. And I think we were maybe just annoyed about how it went in the first match. We knew that we would never have easy opponents, because we also saw the results of the first matches in our group. But did we expect that? No, I thought that we definitely had a good chance to win these matches. Maybe not with such results, but we can play good CS.

Bruno: When you and MalbsMD joined the team, there were many questions about the roles, and whether they were suitable, but you are playing well very quickly.

Did you expect that it would all come together so quickly?

Snax: Looking at how Mario plays, he is a very nice and positive person in the team, that’s where I can start, what Malbs or Mario is like. Mario was very positive about whether he would have to change roles or not. For me, there was no problem with the roles, because I talked before joining about what they would be, and some of them changed after some time.

Mario also had no problems with these roles, really. He said that he would be happy to test new roles and it seems to me that the guy is finding his way in what he is currently doing. He has no problems, he is very positive and active. And as for me, am I doing well? I think that it is not as bad as people thought. I’ve always had no problem with easily adapting to the situation in the team.

I knew there wasn’t much time, so I arranged it in a way I thought was necessary. I added some things but I didn’t overdo it because I knew there wouldn’t be time to practice it. And also because I have the people I have in the team, I knew I could freestyle a little with calls and I know the guys will do well.

Bruno: Now in the quarter-finals, you’re playing the first match against MOUZ, where there’s siuhy. ultimate is playing well in Liquid.

Does that mean that Polish CS is in a good spot right now?

Snax: No, Polish CS is not in a good spot at all. We haven’t had a team for seven years. We have good players and there will always be individuals who break out. I think that now it would be possible to put together a full Polish team of five people and they would do well at the highest level. But we can see that everyone is scattered somewhere, right?

The best Polish IGL, siuhy in MOUZ, the best… we have good snipers. ultimate showed himself from a good side and I think Olek (hades) is strong. We have Kylar, dycha, Kei of course, Goofy. So the truth is that if we put it all together we would have a good team but that’s not the case. There is no organization in Poland, tournaments are gone. I don’t know if the Polish Esports League is still active or not. ESL ended the Polish leagues, so it’s not in a good place, as far as the Polish scene is concerned. As for the players, I think we have good players.

Bruno: You are on the same side of the bracket as NAVI. You may play them in the semi-final and they have a very good record against G2.

Is the team mentally prepared for this rematch?

Snax: I don’t know, that’s a tough question. As for me, well, I think so. It was good to play against them for the first time in Riyadh because I have never played against NAVI even when I was in GamerLegion. I had matches against FaZe, and Vitality, against those teams, but against NAVI for the first time. I also learn from experience from the matches I play against opponents, because I more or less try to understand how the guy likes to call, what to do and so on. And I think it will be easier for me to lead now than it was in Riyadh against them. I think we learned a bit more after Riyadh and I feel confident about the match against NAVI.

Bruno: After moving from GamerLegion to G2 you’re playing with a completely different class of players.

Does that change the way you call?

Snax: For sure, for sure. I do a bit more stupid things because I think I can. I also run around the server a bit, around the map because I have players that will kill anyway. It’s just easier, they are more experienced.

Lastly, what’s your favorite moment from Cologne over the years?

Snax: I don’t remember, it was a long time ago. I remember that the first time I entered the arena or the second time I always liked how many people were there and how many beers they were drinking. It was cool, that I can say.

Bruno: Thanks and good luck.
