Named after the engine that it takes place in. This was the first iteration of all CS games that made use of the at then new Source Engine. CS 1.6 is definitely where the series hit its stride. But with the change to the Source engine it allowed for massive onboarding. It maintained its strong visual presentation, made more stylized with the change to source, while also keeping its strong game identity. And the change to source also helped with the modding scene and content creation side of things.

The novel of CS:Source, is that it was the first of the games that took place in the now standard engine. The game would go on to be updated in a massive sequel, CS:GO. However, Global Offensive has been eventually replaced by CS2 after a decade at the top.
