The latest CS2 updates came on March 22, and it was maybe the biggest in the game’s history. This update saw the Beta release of Counter-Strike 2, the next iteration of Valve’s tactical shooter on the Source 2 engine. As part of the Beta update of CS2, only the classic map Dust 2 is included, as Valve continues to tweak and perfect the balance of the game for a summer release.
Counter-Strike 2 promises to shake up the core gameplay loop in a huge way, with the reveal that smoke grenades are now entirely responsive. This means that players are able to shoot through smokes and see what’s on the other side. The days of the one-way smoke are almost over, although players on the pro scene will undoubtedly find new tricks and strats to counteract this when CS2 finally releases.
The launch of Counter-Strike 2 update has been highly anticipated. Fans have speculated about a CS:GO Source 2 upgrade for years now, with the engine in active use at Valve since 2015. It promises to send off the game and its esports scene with a bang. The overall quality of the pro scene has never been higher, and it’s exciting to see how the players will compete to cement their place in CS:GO history.
Valve seems to update Counter-Strike at its own pace. The developer can sometimes release two updates in the span of a month, or it can go months without a single mention of any new content. It always seems to depend on the size of the upcoming content. Valve isn’t known for building hype, usually preferring to stealth-drop huge content updates and watch the excitement cause instant chaos in the community. There’s usually a decent-sized update to the game around two to three times a year, but this is never set in stone, especially when it comes to Valve. Any bug fixes will be free to CS, and rightly so. Content such as new maps will usually be free, too. However, whenever a new Operation releases, players usually have to pay for a Battle Pass to gain access to most of the content within that Operation. It’s not a huge price to pay, especially as Counter-Strike itself has been free-to-play for years now. Given how infrequently Operations release nowadays, most players don’t mind the fee. CS:GO will continue to be updated until the release of CS2. However, CS2 marks the start of a new journey for Valve, a journey that will likely go on for many years to come. CS2 marks the biggest moment in Counter-Strike history. With more players than ever, we’re sure the new game will receive content updates over the next decade at least. CS2 itself will bring a rework to every map in the game, which in itself is an enormous task. Once the game is out for all to play, we think that Valve’s focus will move toward a constant stream of Operations. CS has had a severe lack of Operations in recent years, but CS2 has the opportunity to right those wrongs. With new Operations, comes new skins and cases for players to collect. It’s an opportunity for Valve surely won’t be able to pass up.
