Digimon Tournament Ultimate Cup 2024 Ruleset Announced

On the 3rd of November, the English X (formerly Twitter) account announced the new ruleset for Ultimate Cup. These rules will go into effect December 2023, and carry on for January 2024. Players have been clambering for rescinding of the limited color format that was in effect for most of 2023.

Enforcing the single color deckbuilding (with dual color cards having to match the main color) made certain types of decks obsolete. DNA Digivolution decks, for example, such as Mastemon and Imperialdramon would be impossible to play due to having 2 different mono-color cards needed to function. Hunters, a frequent top cut deck at most Digimon tournament, is also notably absent due to it having so many different color pieces required.

  • The single color ruling has been rescinded
  • No additional cards are being added to the ban list; the main ban list is the only list in effect.
  • All cards released before RB01 aren’t eligible for play.

The last bullet point is the most crucial one. This will be the first format to introduce a limited format with full set rotation. The eligible card list for December and January (and likely February to March due to product timings) is as follows:

  1. Resurgence Booster [RB01]
  2. Starter Deck Dragon of Courage [ST15]
  3. Starter Deck Wolf of Friendship [ST16]
  4. Booster Blast Ace [BT14]
  5. Limited Card Set [P-103 – P108] (Included in BT14)
  6. BLAST ACE Survey Pack [P-110 – P-115] (Included in BT14)
  7. Box Promotion Digimon Adventure 02 Tutorial Deck (Included in BT14)
  8. Official Store Tournament Vol.11 (Entry Pack)
  9. Winner Pack BLAST ACE
  10. Tamer Party Pack -THE BEGINNING- ver. 1.0 and 2.0 [P-117- P-130] (Movie Promos)
  11. Theme Booster Animal Colosseum [EX05] (From January 26, 2024)

It is important to note that RB01 is listed as a legal set for play, while it is referring to the card ID.

In practice, all reprints from RB01 will be legal for play, mean not only the “Ghost Game” anime cards new to the set will be playable. The inclusion of the RB01 reprints should allow slightly better flexibility for the limited card pool, but the pool of available decks remains small. The expansion in January, EX05 will further expand the playable card pool, however the list of Ultimate Cup events currently announced only leaves Raid’n’Trade’s Online EU regional as a Digimon tournament featuring the EX5 list.

The introduction of set rotation to Digimon is unprecedented in the English format.

Favorites Going Forward

Initial outlooks highlight that standout decks for the December and pre EX5 January decks will be largely BT14 based, due to new support and access to ACE cards. The inclusion of RB01 reprints also improves the consistency of decks that can make use of powerful generic tamers. BT1-089 Mimi Tachikawa, BT1-085 Tai Kamiya and BT1-087 T.K Takaishi were some of the most sought after reprints from RB01.

Plants no longer have access to Bloomlordmon, which will hurt its impressive record in Ultimate Cup. The inclusion of Mimi alongside BT14’s plant support will keep the deck relevant in the rotated format. Additional inclusions of Greymon X and Gatomon from BT14’s pre-release have also been confirmed by head judges for legality. This further bolsters likely frontrunner WarGreymon’s potential. Security Control was also one of the biggest winners of RB01 for availability. While its staple option cards “Chaos Degredation” and “Flame Hellscythe” will be out of rotation, most of the main cards will be available for use.

The revamp of the Ultimate Cup format comes alongside news on official implementation of the 3v3 format in the west.
