Baldur’s Gate 3: How to Get to The Underdark

The Underdark is a huge part of the first act of Baldur’s Gate. But knowing how to get to The Underdark is a different matter entirely. In this guide, we will look at four entrances to make life a little easier.

Finding Baldurs’s Gate 3 Underdark entrances is one of the early challenges you face if you avoid the Mountain Pass on the way to Moonrise Towers. The Underdark is filled with all types of monstrosities, from a bulette tunnelling around, to the appropriately named Hook Horrors.

There’s also a lot of treasure to claim if you’re brave enough to look for it.

The Whispering Depths

The first entry to the Underdark is to the west of Silvanus’ Grove, in the Whispering Depths beneath Blighted Village. This is a mostly-ruined town that goblins have overtaken, and you can either deal with them by combat or persuasion. If you chose to play as a Drow, they’ll simply let you pass.

If you decide to take this route, you would have to have one of the best Baldur’s Gate 3 builds, as there is also a large chamber in which you’ll fight a group of Phase Spiders (alongside a particularly gnarly boss). You must cast Feather Fall and leap into the large hole to use this entrance or take some significant damage.

The Defiled Temple

Using the defiled temple to get to the Underdark can be difficult. You’ll have to overcome a few obstacles including a horde of goblins and a tricky puzzle with some dials. Whether you slaughter them or convince them you’re a pal, you can enter the Defiled Temple through the west side of the Shattered Sanctum in the Goblin Camp through the locked door in Priestess Gut’s room.

You’ll find the Defiled Temple moon puzzle after you’ve snuck past her bodyguard ogre. Or killed it.

Follow these steps to solve the puzzle and open the door to the Underdark:

Spin the south disk three times
Spin the west disk once
Spin the north disk once
Spin the west disk three times
Spin the east disk twice.

Once you’ve spun the dials into the correct position, a doorway will open at the far end of the temple, and you’ll find a ladder leading down into the Underdark and the Selunite Outpost. For more helpful strategies on navigating these challenges, check out our Baldur’s Gate 3 tips and tricks.

Riverside Teahouse

The Sunlit Wetlands are located south of the Blighted Village and lead to an enigmatic cottage in the swamp. You’ll need to defeat the hag Auntie Ethel before heading through the secret passage at the back of her fireplace.

Head down the wooden staircase and you’ll come to a secret door. You’ll need to pick up and equip the Whispering Masks from the table in the corner to be able to see the door.

Follow the Overgrown Tunnel until you come to a waterfall. Use the jump action to leap through the waterfall to reach the opposite side.

Proceed cautiously on the trail to make a loop back up to a twisted door just next to the waterfall entrance. There are several traps along the path, so you must be careful. Here, you’ll find Mayrina in a cage at the bottom. After you free her, you’ll need to use a Feather Fall spell or scroll to jump into the not so bottomless pit and enter the Underdark.

Zhentarim Hideout

There is a building in Waukeen’s Rest with containers obstructing the entrance. Suppose you manage to move the crates and enter the structure. In that case, you will find yourself in a concealed Zhentarim Hideout—the stronghold of a clandestine group operating throughout Faerun.

Naturally, it’s a risky detour to stumble across this Hideout. But those who can negotiate their way out of danger or outwit the numerous guards will be able to locate a closet that you can lockpick to get even farther into the Hideout. As you continue further down, a perception check will be along one of the walls, revealing a fake door to those who pass the check. Pass through the fake door to find an elevator that descends deep into the Underdark.
