Is Baldur’s Gate 3 Connected to 1 and 2?
Obviously, Baldur’s Gate 3 isn’t the first game in the series. Is Baldur’s Gate 3 connected to 1 and 2?
BG3 is the biggest fantasy RPG to come out in recent times and the winner of multiple awards including Game of the Year. It’s an understatement to say this game isn’t well known and an even greater one to say it doesn’t deserve all those awards.
Each campaign can be a truly unique playthrough varying from player to player based on your chosen playstyle. Due to the great feedback, the Baldur’s Gate 3 player count is still continuing to grow.

Are the earlier games worth playing today?
The original Baldur’s Gate was released in 1998, and was a key moment in gaming’s history of the RPG genre, especially as it brought D&D style RPG games to the limelight. Baldur’s Gate had many similarities to BG3:
- Top-down Isometric view
- Compelling stories
- Diverse and well-written characters
- D&D inspired
- Similar races.
The first installment in the Baldur’s Gate series is still playable. You may have to use mods to upscale the graphics and add more mechanics and content. With 10 games in the series, it would take a really long time to play all Baldur’s Gate games.
Baldur’s Gate 2 also followed in the footsteps of the original by sticking to the same script, released just 2 years after the first. That time, not much changed in the graphics and mechanics department. The story however is a direct sequel to the original and same as previously said, modding would be needed to make the game more enjoyable for a modern audience.
But the question remains, is Baldur’s Gate 3 connected to 1 and 2?
Are they connected?
Baldur’s Gate 1 & 2 are not connected to 3 in any meaningful way.
Baldur’s Gate 3 was designed to be a standalone experience. There are only a few references and tributes to the first 2 games. As such, the developers set the game’s story 120 years after the events of Baldur’s Gate 2. So essentially, they are connected, but only as far as lore continuity is concerned. However, you don’t need to have played the earlier games, or even know the older stories, to enjoy Baldur’s Gate 3.
