Clinkz Dota 2 Guide – Master the Undead Archer in Patch 7.14
Clinkz is a Carry who is usually played in the safe lane, but can be quite flexible. He is played somewhat as a ganker, as he doesn’t rely on many items to deal a lot of damage in team-fights. In most games, he will require a BKB as he needs to stand still in order to deal damage to his opponents which naturally makes him vulnerable to stuns and silences.
He is able to deal a massive amount of damage to towers and heroes very quickly through activating Strafe and Searing Arrows.

Complete Clinkz Spell guide
Strafe
Clinkz gains increased attack speed for a few seconds and dodges the next 4 incoming projectiles. Strafe ends if you lose the 4 charges or after 3.5 seconds. Strafe is maxed secondly, after Searing Arrows because it gives you a large increase to your DPS as well as providing you with more survivability. In the early game, you can use it to deal a lot of damage to towers if there are creeps to tank it, or you can use it to trade hits or harass the enemy more easily if you’re likely to get many hits off. Using Strafe will also prevent spells like Storm Hammer from affecting you, which makes it much easier to kill heroes that could otherwise stun you. Be careful about using Strafe near enemies with high attack speed who can negate the buff very quickly.
Searing Arrows
Clinkz lights his arrows on fire, causing them to deal bonus physical damage. Searing Arrows is maxed first because it massively increases your DPS. It will deal damage to towers as it’s physical damage, which makes you very strong at pushing towers. If your lane opponent leaves their lane, you should pressure the tower with Strafe and Searing Arrows. Be aware of the mana cost of using Searing Arrows a lot in lane. Try to use it only to harass the enemy and avoid using to last hit if you can, as it can be very costly for your mana-pool. You can avoid drawing creep aggro by casting Searing Arrows like a spell – casting each attack manually.
Skeleton Walk
Clinkz becomes invisible and gains increased movement speed. Skeleton Walk is usually maxed lastly, mainly because your other two spells are more important as they help you to get kills in the mid game. It allows you to position and re-position yourself in team-fights and ganks much more easily, but this is usually more important in the late game, when enemies are more mobile. It is your main ganking spell as well as your main escape mechanism and having it maxed increases the movement speed and duration and decreases the cooldown. You can use Skeleton Walk while you are teleporting to maximize the time you are invisible. The increased movement speed allows you to get across the map faster and farm different areas more easily. Try to use early enough for it to come off cooldown for when you need to cast it again in a fight, either to escape or chase enemies.

@ Valve
Death Pact
Clinkz consumes a creep, gaining damage and health based on the current HP the target has. This is best used on the strongest creep in one of the large camps. Alternatively, you can use Death Pact on a creep that is under the influence of Helm of the Dominator. Doing so will give you more HP and damage as the creep is granted more HP than usual. Death Pact has a 20 second.
You will get full gold and experience when you kill a creep with this spell which makes it a good spell to use frequently in the early game in Dota 2 esports. Try to consume a large creep before entering a fight or pushing a tower, as it will increase your DPS and survivability. Having the extra HP will also make you harder to gank and kill, so try to use this spell if you intend to farm somewhere risky or look for pick-offs.
Best Clinkz Talents
Level 10: +12% Magic Resistance or +5 Armor
The Magic resistance can be good if you are facing a team with lots of magical damage, otherwise it’s quite underwhelming and the extra armor will be more helpful for you. The armor might also be better if you are facing lots of minus armor spells/items.
Level 15: +30 Searing Arrows Damage or +20% Evasion
Given that Clinkz is capable of dealing a lot of damage very quickly with relatively few items, he doesn’t particularly need the damage which makes a case for the evasion. However, 15% evasion isn’t very effective against lineups that mostly have magical damage. The evasion can be good in situations where you are facing heroes that are unlikely to buy items that provide accuracy, such as an MKB. However, if you can get away with the extra damage, then you should take it.
Level 20: +100 Attack Range or +20 Health Regen
The increased attack range allows you to attack from a safer distance which is especially helpful if you are facing heroes that you need to kite, such as Sven, Lifestealer or Ursa. Otherwise, the extra HP regen will help to tank you up lots and provide you with lots of sustain, especially against damage over time spells.
Level 25: +4s Strafe Stacks/Duration or Searing Arrows Multishot
Both of these talents help you to dish out more damage. The increased Strafe stacks will help you to maintain your buff for longer, which is particularly helpful if you’re finding that your Strafe bonus is being cut short in team-fights. It can also be a great talent choice if you are facing lots of heroes with projectiles, be it spells or attacks. The Searing Arrows Multishot can be good if you need a more consistent damage buff, or if you’re against an illusion hero.
What Items to build on Clinkz
Starting Items
- Wraith Band
- Iron Branch
- Tango
- Ring of Protection
- Clarity
- Enchanted Mango
Clinkz has very low base damage which makes a Wraith Band very good on him. Health regeneration items should be bought according to how much harass you expect to take in your lane. An Enchanted Mango can be built into a Soul Ring and a Clarity will give you enough mana regeneration to use Searing to help you last hit in the early levels when you have low damage. You can also keep ferrying out Clarities to you as you need them throughout the game. You can also get a Ring of Protection if you expect to trade a lot of hits so you can build it into a Ring of Aquila later. Iron Branches can be built into a Magic Wand and can also be used for more regen.
Early Game Items
Ring of Aquila
A Ring of Aquila is a great pickup on Clinkz because it provides him with more last-hitting damage, mana regeneration and helps him to push towers. All of these things are needed by Clinkz which makes this item suitable is every game.
Medallion of Courage
An early Medallion of Courage gives Clinkz more mana regeneration and increases your early and mid game kill potential against some of the best Dota 2 players on the enemy team.
Soul Ring
A Soul Ring will give you a lot more mana regeneration and can be used before casting Death Pact to effectively nullify the HP cost of it. Clinkz really suffers from mana issues if not build properly, and a Soul Ring helps massively with this issue.
Magic Wand
A Magic Wand will give you more sustainability in the early game if you are fighting lots or if you need more regen.
Power Treads
Power Treads are the boots of choice on Clinkz in every game. They give you more attack speed and you can swap the main attribute to use your spells more effectively. They are generally not needed very early as you have attack speed from Strafe and plenty of mana regen from your other items. It can be skipped if you aren’t fighting much in the early game, otherwise they are a good pickup.

Mid Game Items
Desolator
A Desolator is considered a core item on Clinkz because it gives him a massive boost to his DPS in the mid game and the minus armor stacks with the extra damage from Searing Arrows. It also makes him a much stronger tower pusher. If you have an ally who will purchase a Desolator, you can swap up your item build to get an item like Solar Crest or another item which is appropriate to your situation.
Black King Bar
Clinkz is very vulnerable to stuns and magical damage as he tends to stand still and right-click the enemy team down. A BKB allows you to do this in the midst of the enemy team and is generally core in every game. A BKB also prevents you from being silenced which can hinder you from using Skeleton Walk.
Solar Crest
A Solar Crest is a good item if you are facing tanky heroes or heroes with evasion. Generally it’s not worth upgrading it from a Medallion of Courage unless you’re doing so to counter a particular hero.

Late Game Items
Scythe of Vyse
A Scythe of Vyse will solve any mana issues you may ever have and also give you a very powerful late game disable. This is a particularly strong item against heroes that are hard to lockdown or are very farmed. You will essentially force them to buy a Linken’s Sphere. The reason Scythe works on Clinkz is because he already inherently has lots of damage and doesn’t really need much more than his core items to effectively carry his team.
Monkey King Bar
A Monkey King Bar is needed if you are facing heroes with lots of evasion, or if they have spells that grant them temporary evasion such as Laser or Windrun. It will give you lots more damage and make you capable of bursting down most heroes very easily.
Bloodthorn
A Bloodthorn is another option to deal with evasion heroes. It is very strong against casters and heroes that are hard to lockdown. The mana regeneration it provides is very helpful on Clinkz and it’s overall a great item on him.
Eye of Skadi
A Skadi will give Clinkz tons more stats, increasing his DPS, HP and mana-pool. The slow also allows you to attack enemies for longer and kite them more easily.
Daedalus
A Daedalus is an alternative to Bloodthorn which provides more DPS but lacks the ability to silence and ignore the evasion of a hero.
Moon Shard
If you are 6 slotted in the late game, you can consume a Moon Shard to increase your DPS even further. Generally it’s not very important as you gain massive attack speed from Strafe.
Butterfly
A Butterfly gives you loads more attack speed and damage as well as lots of evasion which is good against heroes that are unlikely to buy true strike such as OD.
Situational Items
Helm of the Dominator
Generally having a Helm of the Dominator is not worthwhile on Clinkz because you don’t benefit from its stats and it’s quite expensive. However, having a Helm on someone on your team is a great because it allows you to essentially always have a creep to Death Pact, and one with more HP than usual at that.
Hurricane Pike
A Hurricane Pike can be a good pickup against heroes that you need to kite such as Ursa, Lifestealer, etc. The Dragon Lance will give you more attack range which will let you attack from a farther range and the Force Staff can be used to get you out of spells like Power Cogs or Sprout.
Linken’s Sphere
Linken’s Sphere may be needed against strong single-target spells that can be problematic for you through your BKB, such as Duel or Doom.
Assault Cuirass
Assault Cuirass can be a good item on Clinkz if there are many physical damage dealers on the enemy team. It gives you lots of attack speed and lowers the armor of nearby enemies. It also makes you a bit better pushing towers.
Blink Dagger
A Blink Dagger can be a good mobility item for Clinkz if you need to move around the battlefield more easily or chase slippery heroes.
Nullifier
A Nullifier works well on Clinkz as you can use it to help you kill enemies with buffs that make them harder to kill. The slow works well with the increased attack speed that Strafe provides, and the mute means that enemies won’t be able to use defensive items such as Ghost Scepter or Glimmer Cape to survive your onslaught.

Interesting Clinkz Match-ups
Chen/Enchantress/Helm of the Dominator
These heroes and Helm of the Dominator provide a strong neutral creep for Clinkz to use Death Pact on whenever they are near, be it on his team or against him.
Phoenix
Strafe is a great spell at dealing with Phoenix’s Supernova. If possible, try to save it for when Phoenix uses Supernova, or if there are many levels in it, you can use it fairly early as it lasts 10 seconds at level 4.
Creep/Illusion heroes
Clinkz has no way to deal with illusion or creep heroes, so itemize the best you can and try to focus down the rest of their team.
Spirit Breaker
Spirit Breaker is a decent counter to Clinkz, as he is able to chase him though invisibility and use Dust of Appearance when he reaches him. His bash also makes sure that he is unable to attack anything. SB is also fairly tanky which makes it hard for Clinkz to burst him down, especially if he has a Blade Mail.
True-sight
Clinkz is easily countered by Sentry Wards and Dust of Appearance, as they prevent him from positioning himself well for a fight and escaping from fights respectively.
