Clockwerk Dota 2 Guide – Powerful Initiator in Patch 7.14

Clockwerk is one of the strongest initiators in the game and is very powerful in the early-to-mid game. When played well, he is able to take control of the enemies’ jungle and punish those who are out of position.

He has the potential to completely disrupt the battlefield with his Power Cogs and deal immense damage with Battery Assault.

Complete Clockwerk Spell guide

Battery Assault

Clockwerk launches projectiles at nearby random enemies which deal damage and mini-stun. This is heavily up-gradable through talents. Battery Assault should be maxed first as the damage increases dramatically and the cooldown is reduced. At max level it can potentially deal 1520 magical damage before reductions.

The spell can be used to trade hits with supports in the off-lane more effectively and to even zone them back and potentially kill them. You don’t even need to hit them, simply walk near them to harass them back, just watch out for overextending. The shrapnel interval is 0.7 seconds, so any hero with a casting time of equal to or longer than this will not be able to cast their spell. If you are laning in the offlane against a carry who’s soloing the lane, you can get Battery Assault at level one to contest the lane better and trade hits more effectively. Be careful of using it around creeps though, as it will needlessly push the lane and not hit the enemy hero. You should use Battery Assault before you Hookshot in to get more damage off onto the enemy.

Power Cogs

Clockwerk places Cogs around him which trap heroes close to Clockwerk inside with him. Any enemy that comes in contact with a cog from the outside will be pushed away, take damage and have their mana burned. Doing so will disable but not remove the cog .The cogs can be destroyed after 2-3 hits, or denied instantly by Clockwerk. They can be used to harass opponents in lane by burning their mana and damaging them, although be careful during the cooldown afterwards as they help you to survive the off lane. You can catch the off lane creeps inside the cogs to block them in for a long time, resulting in the enemy creeps nearer to your tower.

After Hookshotting onto an enemy, you can either lock them in with you inside the Power Cogs or move past them to where they might attempt to escape to and cast Cogs. This blocks their escape and, if placed correctly, will push the enemy back, stunning them for almost 1 second and reducing their HP and mana. This is perhaps a better choice in the late game if you need to lockdown an enemy who hasn’t used magic immunity or their escape abilities. This gives your team a bit longer to catch up to you and come in with their disables to get the kill.

In the early-to-mid game it’s usually better to be trapped in with them so that you can hit them with the Battery Assault, especially if you have Blade Mail. If not, it can be riskier, especially if you catch more than one enemy, so consider breaking a cog, or using a Force Staff to escape. At all points in the game, Power Cogs can be used to deter the enemies from chasing or engaging your team.

Rocket Flare

Clockwerk fires a global flare at the target area which, upon arrival, deals damage and provides vision. This is usually maxed secondly because of the increased damage and reduces cooldown which, in conjunction with Battery Assault can allow Clock to get many kills in the early-to-mid game in Dota 2 esports. It provides vision while traveling to the destination, which means that you can cast it across the map and gain vision in a line.

If your allies are about to attempt to kill a hero in a lane, you can cast Rocket Flare either at where you think they will be fighting or somewhere else where it may be beneficial for them to have vision of, such as underneath their tower to scout out teleport responses, or above the trees to prevent juking. You can use Rocket Flare to stack camps, as well as to block them if timed well. If you suspect that the enemies are smoke-ganking you, you can launch a Flare which covers a large area of the enemy jungle to gain intel on their whereabouts. It’s also a great tool for scouting the Roshan pit. If you are defending a tower, you should also use Rocket Flare to push out a lane to pressure your opponents into backing.

Hookshot

Hookshot launches a long-range claw at the target destination and will pull Clockwerk towards what it latches to, if anything. If the latched target is an enemy it will damage and stun the target for a short duration. Aghanim’s Scepter decreases the cooldown to 12 seconds. Hookshot can be used to initiate onto an enemy that is out of position, or one which your team will benefit from being trapped by Cogs. You can use Power cogs, Battery Assault and Blade Mail if you have one to fight the enemy, or escape and leave the opponent(s) trapped.

Hookshot should be used as soon as you have your ultimate, probably most easily on the mid or safe lane in order to secure some kills for your allies. It can be somewhat hard to land Hookshots reliably and it does take practice to get used to it. You should always be aware of your surroundings before using your ultimate as you can hook creeps and allies. For this reason, try to move to the side to ensure a clear hook. Although it may be tempting, a Hookshot is not always needed, as you may be able to smoke gank the enemy and simply walk up to them with Battery Assault and Power Cogs.

Best Clockwerk Talents

Level 10: +4 Armor or +25 Movement Speed

Movement speed will help you to chase down enemies that are a bit faster than most or have mobility spells. The extra armor should be taken if the enemies have a lot of physical damage or minus armor, otherwise the extra movement speed can be helpful in many situations.

Level 15:  +15 Strength or +30 Battery Assault Damage

15 extra Strength will give you 300 more HP and a bit more damage. It can be good if you are taking lots of damage in fights or dying too easily, especially if you have lots of armor. The extra damage increases the potential damage of Battery Assault by 480 damage which is usually better if you don’t need to tank up.

Level 20:or +20% Magic Resistance or +125 Rocket Flare Damage

If you are against lineups with lots of magic damage then the resistance can be worth it. A BKB or a Pipe of Insight will likely be needed in most cases anyway, but it can be good to get both the item and the talent. The extra Flare damage can be very good against creep and illusion heroes or if you are able to land your Flares on several heroes at once.

Level 25: -0.3s Battery Assault Interval or Rocket Flare True Sight

The increased Battery Assault rate will increase the total damage dealt to roughly 2600 magical damage, or roughly 3400 before reductions if the extra damage talent at level 15 was taken as well. This is a massive boost to your late game DPS, but another strong point of the talent choice is that there are a number of spell animations that won’t be able to play because of the reduced Battery Assault interval. For example, all of Bane’s spells would be unaffected by the 0.7 s interval prior to choosing the talent, but he will be unable to cast any spells afterwards, as they all have a cast point of 0.5 s.

Rocket Flare providing true sight is very helpful in many situations, particularly those in which you want to secure map control. You should also consider the true-sight against heroes with invisibility, as it can help you to get kills and ganks more easily without having to buy dusts, sentries or gems. This is arguably not as significant, because supports should be able to buy items that provide true-sight to get ganks and sort out map control if with a gem if you need it. If you’re in a very back and forth game where you need a pick off to be able to push as a team, or need to survive in order to not get pushed, then map control is more easily acieved with the talent than with one or several gems/wards.

What Items to build on Clockwerk

Starting Items

  • Boots of Speed
  • Wind Lace
  • Clarity
  • Observer Ward
  • Smoke of Deceit
  • Iron Branch
  • Tango
  • Healing Salve
  • Enchanted Mango
  • Stout Shield

Clockwerk is usually played in the off lane but many players also choose to roam with him. A roaming Clock will need either Boots of Speed or Wind Lace to be able to get close to enemies and harass them. An off lane Clock can also make good use out of a movement speed item as they allow him to escape to their towers more easily. His spells allow him to be somewhat aggressive at times which also makes movement speed more beneficial.

Items such as Observer Ward and Smoke of Deceit allow you to roam easier and potentially get kills in the early game, especially when you have Hookshot. Stout Shield is a very important item on Clockerk as well, as you will be able to soak up a lot more damage in lane. Standard regen items should suffice, and you can get either a clarity or a Mango if you think you’ll need the mana. An Enchanted Mango can be good against heroes that burn your mana such as Anti-Mage or Lion.

Early Game Items

Tranquil Boots

Tranquil Boots will be the most common boots of choice for Clockwerk, as they give him the regen he needs to roam and stay in the off lane. They also provide more movement speed which is needed on Clock to catch-up to enemies.

Phase Boots

If you have gotten some kills in your lane, you can get Phase Boots. These provide more damage and movement speed than Tranquil Boots which allow you to be more aggressive in the laning phase and early game.

Drum of Endurance

A Drum of Endurance is a great pickup on Clock as it provides him with everything he needs: strength, intelligence, mana regeneration and movement speed. It’s easily built and is a great item for the early-to-mid game.

Urn of Shadows

An Urn can be a good pickup if you are ganking lots in the early game and no one else in the team is going to get one. It improves your ability to roam and is very helpful for your team. You can also use it offensively on an enemy to deal more damage to help you get a kill.

Magic Wand

Clockwerk benefits greatly from having a Magic Wand because of the amount of fighting he does in the early-to-mid game. This allows him to build up charges to help solve his mana issues.

Infused Raindrop

Infused Raindrop can be helpful if Clockwerk faces several magical damage nukes. The item also provides some very helpful mana regeneration for Clock and conveniently builds into an Urn of Shadows if you choose to buy one.

Mid Game Items

Blade Mail

Blade Mail is core on Clockwerk in almost every game. It provides him with armor and mana, both of which he has very little of, and allows him to trap himself in with enemies without them being able to fight Clockwerk back.

Force Staff

Force Staff can be used to escape from your own cogs if it’s too risky to stay inside them and is an overall great mobility item for a strength initiator like Clock. It also provides some additional mana for him.

Eul’s Scepter of Divinity

Eul’s Scepter is an almost completely defensive item on Clock. It provides a lot of mana and tons of mana regeneration, allowing him to roam the map very easily. This is a good item for Clock if the enemies have spells which are detrimental to you inside of your Power Cogs, such as Sun Strike, Torrent and more.

Late Game Items

Aghanim’s Scepter

Aghanim’s reduces Hookshot to 12 seconds and provides you with lots of great stats. This allows you to use your ultimate several times in a fight and to take advantage of the fact that it pierces magic immunity to stun magic immune carries for a few seconds. You can also use it to escape by hooking to allies or creeps. Given all the benefits of the item, many of the best Dota 2 players choose to build it on Clockwerk.

Lotus Orb

A lotus Orb is a great item on Clock because it works similarly to how Blade Mail does. By using the active on yourself when you initiate, the enemy cant cast single-target spells onto you without harming themselves. The active also purges you of debuffs which makes it great against silences for examples.

Solar Crest

Solar Crest provides you with mana regeneration and armor, both of which Clockwerk is in dire need of. It also provides evasion which is helpful against lineups with lots of physical damage. The active can be usefully applied against carries which don’t have true-strike.

Heaven’s Halberd

Heaven’s Halberd is a great item against physical damage dealers and carries. It’s great on Clockwerk because he can initiate onto a carry and use it before they have a chance to BKB. Since Disarm is not removed by BKB, the carry cannot attack for 3/5 seconds. It also Provides Clock with another 45 damage and 400 health.

Shiva’s Guard

Shiva’s Guard is a great item for Clock. It provides him with more armor, which he has very little of and lots of intelligence to allow him to use more spells in fights. The item is best suited against heroes which the attack slow and armor makes good use against. For example, lineups with several physical damage dealers.

Situational Items

Heart of Tarrasque

A Heart can be a great choice for Clock if he needs to tank up to have a stronger presence on the front lines of a team-fight. However, there are usually other items which provide Clockwerk with more utility which suits his playstyle better.

Pipe of Insight

A Pipe of Insight is a great item against lineups with lots of magical damage. It allows Clockwerk to survive for longer after he initiates with Hookshot.

Black King Bar

If you are taking too much magical damage in team-fights and are being disabled by too many heroes, you may need to purchase a BKB to deal with this.

Spirit Vessel

If you are facing a team with lots of strong heals, then a Spirit Vessel can be a very good item to pickup on Clock. It’ll make it much easier for you to pick off heroes with self-heals.

Aeon Disk

An Aeon Disk isn’t a bad item on Clockwerk if you are facing heroes that can lock you down in fights. The passive status resistance is very helpful on you as a strength hero, and the reduced damage input/output is good on Clockwerk because it helps you to initiate in the late game more reliably and land a good Hookshot + Power Cogs combo without dying as easily. t can be a good item f you find yourself getting disabled in fights a lot or dying shortly after initiating.

Interesting Clockwerk Match-ups

Sniper

Clockwerk is a great hero against Sniper as he can Hookshot onto him and deal a significant amount of damage against him. Battery Assault also prevents Sniper from using Assassinate.

Jakiro

Battery Assault makes it hard for Jakiro to use any one of his active spells as they all quite a long cast time.

Heroes such as Queen of Pain and Ember Spirit can easily escape from Power Cogs after you trap them. It may be more effective to move to the side of them to drain their mana and stun them with the Cogs instead.
