Step by step – How to sell items in Dota 2

Luckily, selling items is about as easy as buying them. Most people will spend time managing their items while their hero is dead but you won’t actually be able to sell any items until you respawn at the base. All you need to do it:

  1. Go to the item you want to sell in your inventory
  2. Right click on the item
  3. Select “sell” from the drop down menu.

You can also sell items from your stash using the same method of right clicking and selecting “Sell”.

You also won’t be able to sell items unless you’re within range of  a shop.

There are three on the map: at your own fountain in your base, in the Radiant offlane on the left of the map, and in the Dire offlane on the right. Both secret shops are around the mid point of the map next to the river.

If you’re really confident with your controls and worried about sneaking out of the base long enough to reach a secret shop, items can be sold by placing them on your courier and sending the courier to the shop.

If your courier dies while heading to the shop, you won’t lose the item. You’ll simply have to wait for the courier to respawn before you can try again.

Be careful when selling

There are a couple of reasons you might need to know how to sell items in Dota 2. When you purchase an item, you’ll have 10 seconds in which you can sell it to get a full gold refund in case you miss-click, so time is really of the essence. After that, you’ll only be able to get 50% of the original cost back.

Of course, you won’t be able to sell every item you come across in the game. Neutral items, the Aegis of the Immortal and some others cannot be sold at all. This shouldn’t have too much impact on your game though, items like the Block of Cheese, made by assembling 18 healing lotuses into one dairy treat, are far more useful than the gold you’d get for them at the shop.
