Jakiro Dota 2 Guide – How to Play the Twin-Headed Dragon in Patch 7.13b

Jakiro is a tanky support with very low cooldowns. He has a slow, a stun, strong attack slow debuffs and a very highly damaging ultimate when placed well. Jakiro is effective at pushing thanks to Dual Breath and Liquid Fire and can contribute lots to a team-fight thanks to his spells being on relatively low cooldowns and having long range.

Effective use of Jakiro requires good positioning for his spells as they have very long cast times and are mostly cast in a straight line in front of him. As such, Jakiro should purchase items that make it easier for him to position himself in fights and keep himself alive through them.

Complete Jakiro Spell Guide

Dual Breath

Jakiro breathes fire in a cone in the target direction which deals damage over time and slows movement and attack speed for the duration. This is almost always skilled at level 1 because it gives you the most kill potential out of all of your spells. It also lets you harass and trade hits very easily. Dual Breath is usually skilled twice early and left until later before maxing it out. This is because the difference in burn damage between level 1 and 2 is twice as much, and the mana cost is only increased by 5, as opposed to 15 at all other levels. This makes it more efficient to leave it at level 2 than it is to continue skilling it or to just leave it at level 1.

Dual Breath can be used for pushing creep-waves and farming neutral camps quickly. Unlike his other skills, Dual Breath has a much smaller range which makes it not so great at defending towers. When laning, you can use this skill quite often, especially if you have a Clarity in your inventory. This is because it costs low mana relative your mana-pool. Use it to harass enemies out of lane and to try to get kills with your laning partners.

Ice Path

Jakiro freezes enemy units in a straight line in the target direction. Ice Path is usually maxed secondly as it increases the stun duration and reduces the cooldown. Ice Path gives flying vision of the affected area when cast. It’s often ignored until after having maxed Liquid Fire, as it’s generally a better spell than Ice Path in the early game as it allows you to push towers more easily. One level of Ice Path only stuns enemies for 1 second although it will still cancel Town Portal Scrolls. You should try to combo Ice Path with Macropyre so that enemies are caught in it for as long as possible and take lots of of damage.

Liquid Fire

Jakiro spits a fireball in replacement to his regular attack that affects all enemies near the target and which decreases attack speed and also deals damage over time. Liquid Fire is usually maxed first as it’s a great way to harass enemies out of lane and to take a tower faster as it affects buildings. This means that whenever you are pushing you should make sure that the tower is affected by Liquid Fire. Jakiro’s attack range isn’t great, at least not until the level 20 talent is taken, which means that you should only use Liquid Fire if it doesn’t put you out-of-position in team-fights.

Combined with Dual Breath and at level 4 of these spells, Jakiro can decrease enemy attack speed by a total of 100. This is a very strong spell against carries as it has a very low cooldown at level 4 and decreases a lot of attack speed, and you should try to cast it whenever it is possible. Liquid Fire is a great spell for farming as it doesn’t cost any mana and deals extra damage and also reduces the amount of damage that the neutrals will deal. Note that when cast manually, Liquid Fire has a 50% increased range.

Macropyre

Jakiro lays down a long path of fire in the target direction, dealing damage over time to any enemy units that stand in it. Aghanim’s Scepter increases the duration, distance and damage of Macropyre. Although it has a relatively low cooldown, Macropyre is a spell which is quite hard to use effectively. Often, the sole purpose of Macropyre is not to deal damage to enemies, but to also zone them. It’s a great spell to defend and push enemy towers, or to take/contest Roshan. Due to its low cooldown, you can even use it to farm a very stacked neutral camp if you need the gold and you have no carry which can easily farm it. Macropyre will destroy any trees in its path which makes it effective against enemies kiting in trees or heroes like Monkey King.

Best Jakiro Talents

Level 10: +30% XP Gain or +8% Spell Amplification

Generally, you can’t go wrong with choosing the extra XP gain in Dota 2 esports. It will help you get your levels more easily, especially if the game looks like it will last into the late game. The spell amplification can also be good if you think the game won’t last into the late game or if you are playing against illusion or creep heroes so that you can clear them more easily.

Level 15: +300 Cast Range or +40 Dual Breath Burn Damage

The increased cast range helps you to catch enemies that are hard to lockdown with your stun. It also lets you cast your spells further away from enemies and danger. The extra Dual Breath damage is very good against illusion or creep heroes, or if you don’t particularly need the extra cast range.

Level 20: +60 Liquid Fire Attack Speed or +150 Gold/Min

The extra GPM will help you to get items in the late game and have a much stronger impact. The extra attack speed slow will make it easier for you to control enemy carries, but this is only really useful if you are playing against carries without many forms of dispel or if it’s too dangerous for you to get near enemies. The slow is also helpful if you’re struggling to break the enemy’s high-ground and you are stuck sieging, as you will reduce the amount of damage that they deal to your units. Even in this case, the extra gold can help fund an item like Shiva’s Guard which is effectively a slightly lesser Liquid Fire aura. If you think the game will last a lot longer, the extra GPM be a more worthwhile choice.

Level 25: Macropyre Pure and Pierces Immunity or +1.25s Ice Path Duration

The Macropyre buff is very strong if you have an Aghanim’s Scepter as it will prevent enemies from just using any form of magic immunity and hitting your buildings for 30 seconds. It’s very strong against tanky heroes or heroes with high magic resistance/immunity. The extra damage is also very helpful if you are behind or if you have lost some barracks. The increased Ice Path duration increases the full duration to almost 4 seconds. This is very strong against heroes that are hard to lockdown or carries which are very farmed.

What Items to build on Jakiro

Starting Items

  • Iron Branch
  • Healing Salve
  • Tango
  • Clarity
  • Observer Ward
  • Sentry Ward
  • Smoke of Deceit

As a support hero, Jakiro should buy support items including Wards and a Smoke of Deceit. You should also give 2 Tangos to your mid laner if they should require it. Standard regeneration items allow you to stay in lane for longer and support your carry. As Jakiro relies on positioning, you can buy a Wind Lace with your starting gold if you have some left over, otherwise you can pick it up later.

Early Game Items

Wind Lace

All of Jakiro’s spells require good positioning and having high movement speed helps to achieve this. A Wind Lace is a cheap item that can be built into either a Eul’s or Tranquil Boots, both of which are good on Jakiro. This makes it a natural and effective item to buy in the early game.

Arcane Boots

If your team needs the mana regeneration from Arcane Boots, you should pick them up. You should also get them if you intend to build Guardian Greaves. The extra mana also makes it easier to cast your ultimate more often.

Tranquil Boots

Tranquil Boots give Jakiro more movement speed which he really needs. His spells don’t cost very much mana either, so he doesn’t necessarily need Arcane Boots. The HP regen is nice for Jakiro as well as he has quite a lot of HP.

Magic Wand

Magic Wand is a cheap regenerative item on Jakiro that may let him cast a few more spells in a team-fight which may end up being crucial.

Mid Game Items

Eul’s Scepter of Divinity

Eul’s Scepter gives Jakiro even more movement speed, some intelligence and lots of mana regeneration. It also has great synergy with his spells, as he can Cyclone enemies, cast Macropyre and then an Ice Path in time for when they land. This will stun them right in the middle of the damage, and you can slow them with Dual Breath to make them take even more damage. Eul’s can also be used defensively against heroes that can burst you down or debuff you with silences, slows or DoTs.

Force Staff

Force Staff gives you some intelligence to cast more spells but most importantly it lets you move around the battlefield more easily to land spells like Ice Path.

Glimmer Cape

Glimmer Cape gives you a large amount of magic resistance and invisibility when used. This makes it very strong against heroes with strong damage over time like Venomancer or Ancient Apparition but also against heroes that can focus you down quickly.

Aether Lens

Aether Lens increases the reach of your spells and gives you a lot more mana. This works very well with Ice Path as you can catch heroes that are harder to lockdown more easily.

Late Game Items

Guardian Greaves

If you purchased Arcane Boots in the early game, then you should consider Guardian Greaves. These give your team a helpful HP and mana heal, as well as purging you of most debuffs. This makes it very handy against silences and slows, but less effective otherwise. Especially as it doesn’t really provide Jakiro with any increased form of movement which he very much benefits from.

Aghanim’s Scepter

Aghanim’s Scepter is a great late game item, especially if you got the level 25 Macropyre talent choice. It makes your ultimate much more effective as it lasts 3x as long, reach farther and deal more damage. In particular, it becomes very effective at defending your high-ground as it can clear 2 full waves when timed well. This item can help you win games and secure Dota 2 ranks.

Shiva’s Guard

Shiva’s Guard is a great item against carries or lineups with lots of physical damage. The armor will tank you up, and the extra intelligence lets you get lots more spell casts off. Shiva’s works well on Jakiro because the active ability to slow movement speed combos well with Macropyre and Dual Breath. The decreased attack speed aura also stacks well with the reduced attack speed from Dual Breath and Liquid Fire.

Scythe of Vyse

Scythe of Vyse will give you enough intelligence and mana regen to use tons of spells in team-fights. Most importantly it gives you a very strong disable which you can stack onto your Macropyre combo to deal even more damage to an enemy. A Scythe is a very strong item against heroes that are hard to lockdown, have high mobility, or carries that are very farmed.

Situational Items

Mekansm

Mekansm is a good item if your team intends to fight a lot in the early/mid game against heroes with strong push, such as Chen, etc. If you get a Mekansm, you should get Arcane Boots to support the mana cost of it along with all of your other spells. However, Mekansm doesn’t help you when it comes to positioning, which is important for all of his spells, so you aren’t necessarily the best Mekansm carrier.

Rod of Atos

Rod of Atos is a great item on Jakiro against heroes with high mobility or escape spells. It tanks Jakiro up even more and gives him lots of intelligence to help with casting spells.

Ghost Scepter

A Ghost Scepter can be used to save Jakiro from carries with strong physical burst damage such as Clinks, Ursa and Templar Assassin.

Gem of True Sight

Jakiro is quite a good Gem carrier as he tends to stay in the safety of the back lines of his team during team-fights and throw his spells out from a distance. Also, he is naturally quite tanky.

Veil of Discord

A Veil of Discord will give you some all around helpful stats, including strength, intelligence and armor. It can also be used to increase the amount of magic damage enemies take. This works well with all of your spells, although it is generally not worth it if your team lacks much magical damage other than yours.

Urn of Shadows

An Urn of Shadows gives you some nice early game stats and a helpful heal. This can be a good pickup if you have a team with high early game kill potential and no one else to buy one.

Spirit Vessel

A Spirit Vessel is a natural upgrade to Urn of Shadows. The active provides your team with more healing and also reduces enemy healing which is very strong against many heroes. The item also provides you with more HP and movement speed which helps Jakiro to position himself for his spells more easily.

Kaya

A Kaya reduces the mana cost of your spells and reduces the amount you lose through mana-drain spells. The spell amplification is also quite good on Jakiro as it buffs almost all of his spells. Its usually only worth picking up when there are enemies who have mana-drain spells however, as it doesn’t help you to position yourself anymore which is the most important aspect for Jakiro.

Interesting Jakiro Match-ups

Clockwerk

Battery Assault is very good at preventing Jakiro from using his spells when trapped in Power Cogs with him. Although you can cast your spells, they will often be delayed and can be hard to use effectively.

Illusion/Creep Heroes

Jakiro can very easily clear illusions and-or creeps thanks to his damaging AoE spells. These also make him particularly good at defending towers from creep heroes such as Broodmother and Nature’s Prophet.

AoE Disablers

Heroes like Faceless Void, Enigma and Magnus work very well with Jakiro as they allow you to deal lots of damage through your ultimate.

Monkey King

Jakiro counters Monkey King quite well. Ice Path gives vision of trees so that you can easily find him, Macropyre can cut it down easily and your damage over time spells prevent him from jumping to a tree. If you manage to destroy the tree Monkey King is on with Macropyre, he will be stunned for several seconds in the fire dealing a massive amount of damage. Macropyre can also be used very effectively against MK when he uses his ultimate, as he greatly reduces the area in which he can stand, and may even force him out of it. The attack speed reduction also prevents him from easily gaining stacks of Jingu Mastery.
