Terrorblade Dota 2 Guide – How to Sow Terror in Patch 7.14

Terrorblade is an illusion based carry who has very low health and is quite squishy, but has the highest base and starting armor in the game. This makes Terrorblade quite good at tanking some attacks from the creep-wave when trading hits with an enemy, especially if you have a Stout Shield.

His skill build is quite flexible and depends on what is needed. If you are able to farm safely, you can max Conjure Image first as it will help you to farm neutral camps and push towers towers faster. If you are in a contested lane or if you’re against an aggressive lineup, then you should consider maxing Metamorphosis first.

As an illusion based hero, most of your items should focus on increasing your attributes rather than adding raw damage.

Terrorblade spells and how they work

Reflection

Terrorblade creates an invulnerable and completely immune illusion of every visible enemy hero within 900 radius that chases and attacks the hero it spawned from. The reflection will chase enemies at maximum movement speed, benefit from and share any auras from the hero and ignore terrain and vision, however it cannot attack enemies it cannot see. This spell is almost always maxed lastly because it doesn’t scale very well, only increasing in damage and lowering cooldown per level. It is usually good to get at least one level of this spell in the laning phase to help you get kills however, because it provides a steady 25 % movement speed slow at all level. Can also fool enemies that spot you with their Dota 2 wards. The spell has a much longer cast animation during Metamorphosis.

Conjure Image

Terrorblade spawn a fully controllable illusion of himself. The illusion is visibly different from your main hero, although you can still fool enemies by mimicking realistic movements as they look similar. When the illusion is spawned, you do not become immune for a brief moment like Naga Siren or Chaos Knight become. This spell is usually maxed firstly or secondly depending on your lane. Conjure Image helps you to farm more effectively, although if you are fighting a lot, then it’s usually better to max Metamorphosis first and Conjure Image secondly.

You should use Conjure Image after using Metamorphosis as it will do much more damage than normally. This will also let you tear through towers. When you have maxed or have several points in Conjure Image, have taken the enemy’s tower or have some early game items, you can farm the jungle very effectively through this spell. The illusion will help you to farm jungle camps more quickly and can even tank quite a lot of damage, especially if you have 2 illusions alive. In the mid and late game, you can be farming the jungle with your hero and use your illusions to farm a nearby lane. You can also use your illusions to stack nearby camps when appropriate. Doing so often will increase your GPM and potentially the GPM of your allies.

Metamorphosis

Terrorblade transforms, gaining bonus damage and ranged attack at the cost of reduced movement speed. All of his items will interact with him as if he is a ranged hero during Metamorphosis. Metamorphosis has an incredibly long cooldown of 155 seconds, which means it should be used very sparingly. It is usually maxed secondly unless you are fighting a lot in the early game or if you need to be very active. This is because Terrorblade’s main priority is farming, which Conjure Image helps more with.

If you manage to get a kill in your lane against the off laner in the early game, it can be very effective to use Metamorphosis to push the tower if you didn’t already use it. This is because you take advantage of the extra damage the spell provides you and your illusions to take the tower very quickly, without any enemies able to defend it effectively, unless they teleport in. Beware of taking fights when Metamorphosis is on cooldown, and advise your teammates when it is ready, as Terrorblade relies on it to team-fight effectively.

Sunder

Terrorblade swaps his current HP percentage with the enemy or allied hero or illusion. The spell has quite a long cast animation and a very short cast range, which often makes it very hard to cast reliably. The spell has a very long cooldown and a high mana cost in the early game, although  these become much lower as it is skilled. The target and Terrorblade will never go below 25% HP through Sunder.

The spell is unique in its interactions with spells such as Ice Blast and Blade Mail; it effectively ignores them. Although it’s often impractical to do so, Sunder can be used on an ally to save them if you have full HP, and they have low or are about to die. You should usually only consider doing so however, if it is safe for you to do, and it won’t prevent you from doing what you were about to do, be it pushing, fighting or farming.

The best Talents for Terrorblade

Level 10: +20 Movement Speed or 10% Evasion

Unless you really need the evasion to tank up against an excessive amount of physical damage on the enemy team, you should take the movement speed. It will help you to farm more quickly in the early game, as you will move around the jungle and between lanes more quickly. It also helps you to avoid getting kited as easily during Metamorphosis, since it reduces your movement speed for its duration.

Level 15: +300 Health or +25 Attack Speed

Terrorblade’s HP is notoriously low due to his low base strength and strength gain. An extra 300 HP at level 15 is an incredible amount, and it’s especially valuable since your illusions benefit from it also. The attack speed is nice, but it is simply not as valuable as the free HP. It will really help you to stay alive during fights, and it is exactly what Terrorblade needs to climb Dota 2 ranks.

Level 20: +10 All Stats or -10s Reflection Cooldown

The Reflection cooldown can be very strong against heroes like Luna, Phantom Lancer or Anti-Mage. Heroes that build attribute items are somewhat countered by this spell, as it makes their illusion deal more damage. The illusion is completely invulnerable which more-or-less guarantees that they will take a lot of damage from the spell. The cooldown reduction will put this spell on a 6 second cooldown, which is very strong during team-fights. Against any other kinds of carries, the stats are usually better. The extra stats will tank you up a bit and give you a bit more damage and you will usually get more value from the stats than from the Reflection cooldown reduction if the illusions won’t be particularly strong anyway.

Level 25: -35s Sunder Cooldown or +300 Metamorphosis Attack Range

The extra attack range is generally more favorable a talent, since it allows you to attack from a very long range. This will help you to avoid getting kited and chase down enemies more easily. It can also be very good if you need to stand farther back, at a safer distance during team-fights. If the extra attack range won’t help you much, which is often the case against heroes that can close the gap quite easily, then the Sunder cooldown reduction can be good. The cooldown reduction can also be very strong if you are taking lots of damage in team-fights and need more sustainability. It will reduce the cooldown of Sunder to 5 seconds, which is incredibly useful given its 0 mana cost at level 3.

Build these items on Terrorblade

Starting Items

  • Stout Shield
  • Enchanted Mango
  • Healing Salve
  • Tango
  • Iron Branch

Terrorblade has very low HP and strength gain, although he has quite high armor. However, he still very much needs a Stout Shield as he helps him to tank right-clicks and creeps even more easily. A Mango is also very strong on Terrorblade because it allows him to cast a Metamorphosis if he happens to run low on mana. Terrorblade almost completely relies on this spells to get kills during the laning phase. Basic regeneration items and Iron Branches should fill out the rest of your inventory. If your last-hits are being contested in your lane, you can get a quelling blade. However, Terrorblade has very high agility gain and with a few levels will quickly gain more right-click damage.

Early Game Items

Power Treads

Power Treads are the boots of choice for Terrorblade because they provide agility and attack speed which his illusions benefit from. They help you to farm the jungle a bit faster in the early and mid game as well. Try to switch the primary attribute to intelligence before you cast any of your spells, as it will help you to preserve your mana-pool.

Ring of Aquila

A Ring of Aquila is a very strong early game item on Terrorblade. It provides lots of damage, mana regeneration and an armor aura that helps you to push the tower a bit more easily. Terrorblade can take towers very quickly in the early game by using Metamorphosis and this relatively cheap item will tank your creeps up a bit more when pushing and help you to take the tower a bit faster.

Yasha

Yasha builds into Manta Style which is a core item on Terrorblade. It gives Terrorblade more agility, attack speed and movement speed. The first 2 benefit his illusions and help him to farm the jungle a bit faster, and the movement speed will make you move between jungle camps faster, further increasing your farm rate.

Dragon Lance

A Dragon Lance can be a good early-to-mid game item on Terrorblade because the passive attack range increase benefits his Metamorphosis form. It’s almost always a good pickup on Terrorblade and you can get it before or after Yasha/Manta Style depending on your game. The strength and agility help you to fight a bit more easily and it also lets you kite enemies around a bit more easily, since you don’t have to move as close to them to attack them. It builds into a Hurricane Pike which is also a very strong item on Terrorblade and needed in many situations.

Mid Game Items

Manta Style

A Manta Style is a very strong item on Terrorblade since he mainly buys items which increases his attributes. It allows him to spawn illusions of himself which is incredibly strong during Metamorphosis, which will also allow him to push down towers incredibly quickly. The stats it provides greatly increases his DPS and farm rate, and the self-dispel it provides upon cast is very helpful against a number of spells. Overall, it’s a core item on the hero as it provides a lot for Terrorblade.

Hurricane Pike

A Hurricane Pike gives Terrorblade a lot of utility, while still being a reliable and effective item on him. It grants increased attack range which is helpful during Metamorphosis, especially against heroes that you can kite or if you need to push towers more carefully. It provides a lot of strength and agility for him and his illusions, which increases his DPS and tanks him up a bit, and lastly it gives him a strong active. The ability to Force yourself out of dangerous positions will help to keep you alive in several situations, and you can also use it to kite melee carries that can easily close the gap on you. It’s also very strong against heroes like Outworld Devourer, who can deal a lot of damage even from ranged, as it will keep them out of range of you while you can attack them for a short burst.

Butterfly

A Butterfly is a very strong mid-to-late game item on Terrorblade. It provides a massive increase to his DPS which his illusions almost entirely benefit from. It also provides lots of evasion or movement speed which will increase your survivability against physical damage dealers and help you to escape or chase down enemies. Overall, it’s a core mid or late game item as it is almost unrivaled in terms of increasing your damage output.

Late Game Items

Eye of Skadi

An Eye of Skadi provides a massive boost to all of your attributes, which is very beneficial for an illusion hero such as Terrorblade. It’s the best item to get if you need to tank up, as it also benefits your illusions and grants some damage and control in team-fights. The movement/attack speed slow is incredibly strong against physical damage carries, especially ones which you need to kite duing Metamorphosis. It makes it much easier for you to get kills, especially if you have a Dragon Lance/Hurricane Pike, as you can effectively stand still and attack the target without having to move very much. This is a core late game item, as it provides you with several stat increases and benefits, and will be your one-way ticket to 10k MMR.

Moon Shard

A Moon Shard can be consumed after getting 6 items to passively increase your attack speed. Overall, it’s usually not worth getting to keep in your inventory as it doesn’t provide any attributes, which Terrorblade greatly needs.

Situational Items

Daedalus

A Daedalus is a very situational item on Terrorblade. If you need more damage against particularly tanky heroes, it will help you to burst down enemies, especially during Metamorphosis. However, your illusions do not benefit from the raw damage that the item provides. It’s often better to get either an MKB or even a Divine Rapier if you need more damage, however Daedalus certainly has it’s place on Terrorblade in certain situations.

Mask of Madness

A Mask of Madness gives Terrorblade a massive increase to his attack speed at the cost of armor and silencing him. Although it’s not always a good pickup, it can be a decent early game item. It will help you to farm faster and burst down towers or heroes during Metamorphosis. It’s usually not a good item if you are facing heroes with lots of physical damage, minus armor, or heroes that can close the gap to you quite easily, such as Phantom Assassin. In addition, a Mask of Madness will usually delay your other core items such as Manta Style and Hurricane Pike which are often very needed.

Black King Bar

A Black King Bar may be needed quite often on Terrorblade. He tends to stand still at attack enemies and towers from range with Metamorphosis, which makes him a relatively easy target for magical damage spells and disables, such as Epicentre or Echo Slam. A BKB tanks you up a bit and gives you a bit of damage, but most importantly, the magic immunity will tank you up against any magical damage which is incredibly strong given Terrorblade’s relatively small HP pool.

Monkey King Bar

A Monkey King Bar is the best item for Terrorblade when you need to deal with enemies with evasion. It adds a lot of DPS through the pure damage procs and attack speed. It’s not exactly ideal because it doesn’t provide any attributes, but you will almost always need it against heroes like Phantom Assassin.

Linken’s Sphere

If you’re playing against a lineup with lots of strong single-target disables or nukes, then you may need a Linken’s Sphere, as the best hard supports in Dota 2 will try to immediately shut you down. It provides lots of stats, which is great for Terrorblade and the regen it provides will help to sustain your HP and mana-pools which you farm throughout the mid game. Consider whether it may be a better idea to get a BKB instead, or as well.

Sange and Yasha

A Sange and Yasha is a relatively uncommon item on Terrorblade, because there are usually bigger items you can get on him. However, if you need to do a lot of fighting in the mid game and tank up a bit, then a Sange and Yasha can be a decent pickup. It can be good if you are a bit behind and need to catch-up and have a bigger impact in team-fights. It can be disassembled into a Manta Style later.

Diffusal Blade

A Diffusal Blade gives you and all of your illusions the mana-burn on auto-attacks which is very strong, as Terrorblade spawns several illusions. It also grants lots of agility and a strong slowing disable, which can be very strong if you don’t have many disables on your team or if you need to slow enemies down that can easily kite you. Diffusal Blade is often ignored because it delays bigger items such as Manta Style, Butterfly or Eye of Skadi. The Eye of Skadi also provides a stronger slow, and the Butterfly provides more DPS, so it is usually only picked up if you need the mana-burn against heroes like Medusa or Wraith King.

Interesting Match-ups for Terrorblade

AoE magical damage

Any form of burst magical damage is strong against Terrorblade since he has a very small HP pool. However, AoE magical damage is also excellent at clearing his illusion army, do Terrorblade’s detriment. In many situations you’ll need a BKB to tank up and not get burst down every team-fight.

Illusions

All of Terrorblade’s damage is single-target, which makes him not such a strong hero against heroes like Anti-Mage or Phantom Lancer. There isn’t much you can do against these heroes really, other than trying to out-farm them and attack the real hero.

Elder Titan

Elder Titan’s Natural Order is incredibly strong against Terrorblade. Terrorblade has very high base armor which scales with the agility he gains from attribute items such as Butterfly and Eye of Skadi. He also has quite a lot of AoE damage which allows him to clear your illusion-army if you’re not careful.
