Universal Heroes Dota 2 – How are they different?
Universal heroes were only introduced in Dota 2 fairly recently with patch 7.33.
There are over 120 heroes in Dota 2 currently, split into 4 categories: Strength, Intelligence, Agility and Universal. Each category gains attack damage benefits from their base stats that increase as the game goes on. The universal heroes Dota 2 players need to know about can be played regardless of what position you prefer to play.

Which Heroes are Universal in Dota 2?
If you want to know how to play Dota 2, you’ll need to learn everything you can about the new category. Patch 7.33 really changed the game for Dota. It introduced enormous map changes, 2 Roshan pits, neutral creeps, items and a lot more. And universal heroes were one of the biggest changes of all.
This makes them formidable opponents, especially early in the laning stage.
Abaddon | Bane | Batrider |
Beastmaster | Brewmaster | Broodmother |
Chen | Clockwerk | Dark Seer |
Dark Wiilow | Dazzle | Enigma |
Invoker | IO | Lone Druid |
Lycan | Magnus | Marci |
Mirana | Nyx Assassin | Pangolier |
Phoenix | Sand King | Snapfire |
Techies | Timbersaw | Vengeful Spirit |
Venomancer | Visage | Void Spirit |
Windranger | Winter Wyvern |
Many of the universal heroes benefit from the increase to their base damage stats by being played in flexible roles. Abaddon is often played as a position 1, 3 or 5. Windranger has successfully been played in almost every role in the game. Mirana, Timbersaw and Snapfire have all had their time in the mid lane through various letter patches.
In a world of late game patches, late game heroes have a huge impact. Those that can scale and itemize well thrive in these patches.
How are Universal Heroes in Dota 2 different?
Previously, Dota 2 hero categories were determined by an individual hero’s primary attribute. A spell heavy hero such as Shadow Shaman will usually fall into the Intelligence category and this score will affect their mana regeneration speed. Right-click physical damage based heroes such as Sven are often found in the Strength category where they gain +1 attack damage per strength stat.
The latest universal category helps to fit heroes into their own space rather than shoehorning them into categories that don’t really make sense.
They differ from other hero categories as they receive +0.7 attack damage from their strength, intelligence and agility stats altogether.
With the introduction of universal heroes Dota 2 ultimately changed how itemization works in the game. Items that scale attack damage through stats such as Eye of Skadi, Helm of the Overlord or even a good old fashioned Wraith Band or two have an enormous impact.
