Patch 7.33d Dota 2 bug gives vision of enemy in fog of war
Dota 2 player encountered an unusual bug in his match, which allowed him to see the enemy Faceless Void player despite being in the fog of war. The replay of this glitch was published on Dota 2 Reddit, which raised a debate regarding the mechanics of how it occurred.
Bugs after a massive Dota 2 Update aren’t too surprising, considering all updates typically ship with bugs. However, considering the two culprits that caused this bug didn’t receive any massive overhaul in their game mechanics.
It’s somewhat concerning to discover such a game-losing bug.
Visible in fog-of-war bug
The bug is presumably triggered after Grimstroke used Phantom’s Embrace on an enemy Faceless Void. The skill sends a summoned spirit to the target but is stopped by the enemy’s Chronosphere, hence it never reaches him. During that time, Void managed to teleport away, and the phantom got stuck at the location Void TP-out. Usually, the summoned spirit would eventually expire and return to Grimstroke without any side effects.

Faceless Void is visible in fog-of-war by the enemy team, shared by Reddit u/ijok-man
However, in this case, Void remained visible to Grimstroke’s team until they finally killed him. This gave them insight into where he was farming and plausibly smoke movements based on his location.
As the discussions continue regarding the bug, other players are more concerned about Void’s item build in that game. Even Kevin “Purge” Godec finds his items shameful and is least concerned about the bug itself. If you need a better Faceless Void Dota 2 Guide, here’s a complimentary recommendation.
Jokes aside, it is a relatively difficult bug to reenact, so there won’t be very impactful.
Vision bugs on the rise
On a side note, fog-of-war vision bugs have been rampant recently, such as the Azure Ray bug abuse case at Bali Major 2023. Filipe “Astini” Astini reported Azure Ray for alleged bug abuse of the Watcher. The bug lets a team check whether a Watcher post has been taken by the enemy team or not.
This morning while analyzing the replays of Azure Ray, I noticed a weird pattern of their pre-rune movements. After a bit of trial and error, I understood that they were abusing a bug to find out if their enemies had already taken a specific watcher.

In Astini’s report, he believed Azure Ray’s pre-rune movements were suspicious, as if they knew which Watcher post was already taken and took advantage of it. Despite the callout after game 1, many suspected Azure Ray still abused the bug in an alternate method. Another way to check is by alt-clicking on the Watcher to see the colour of the radius circle. The red circle means it’s an enemy Watcher and white means the latter.
The Bali Major admins eventually released Azure Ray scot-free, due to insufficient evidence but the bug is still ongoing.
It seems that this series of fog-of-war bugs could potentially be advantageous to abuse. Thus, let’s hope that the Dota 2 dev team patches them before the upcoming Riyadh Masters 2023 and International 12 Regional Qualifiers.
