Saudi Arabian organization, Team Falcons, has won the Esports World Cup (EWC) 2025 Club Championship, claiming the lion’s share ($7 million) of the $27 million prize pool.

It comes as no surprise to most onlookers, considering the organization has teams or players competing in 22 of the 25 disciplines, with multiple entrants into some events such as Chess.

What was a bit surprising, however, was how close a few other organizations came to spoiling Falcons’ back-to-back win. Despite the EWC 2025 running since July 8,  Falcons only found their first tournament win on August 3, lifting the Overwatch Midseason Championship.

Instead of soaring high above the competition, Falcons experienced some close calls before it was no longer mathematically possible for any organization to overtake them.

A Closer-Than-Anticipated EWC Club Championship

Last year, Team Falcons dominated the Club Championship, blowing away the competition to score 5665 points, more than double that of 2nd-place finish, Team Liquid, who managed 2545 points.

At the 2025 Club Championship, it came down to the wire on August 21. With the final three tournaments running in tandem, Liquid (4200) and Vitality (3950) still had a chance to beat Team Falcons (4700) to the 1st-place prize.

When Falcons dispatched G2 Esports in the Esports World Cup CS2 event, guaranteeing an extra 200 points, it became mathematically impossible for Vitality to take the crown.

Both Liquid and Falcons failed to score points in the Crossfire event, leaving it up to Liquid’s last hope, Alan “Nephew” Sun, in the Street Fighter 6 tournament.

Nephew managed to beat Hikaru Nakatani 3-0 before Hajime “Tokido” Taniguchi crushed Team Liquid’s hope, eliminating Nephew 3-1 in Group C Phase 1. As Nephew’s key was crushed, Liquid had no more chances to earn points, resulting in Team Falcons becoming back-to-back EWC Club Championship winners.

With Street Fighter 6 and Crossfire finishing up on August 23, and CS2 closing out the EWC on August 24, the final standings of all teams will become available soon.
