Chat, is it woke to not want to inpregnate your second cousin? FGC reacts to Alex’s story in Street Fighter 6

Not every game can be like Overwatch when it comes to lore. Recently, Street Fighter 6 appeared to lose track of who is who to who in its own character storylines, creating a bit of an incestuous moment in-game.

On March 17th, Street Fighter 6 got its next DLC fighter, Alex. When you finish Arcade mode with Alex, you get rewarded – or, rather, scarred – with some character-specific lore. In this case, Alex married his younger second cousin, Patricia. Oh, and she’s pregnant. Also, he’s always shirtless.

While it seemed like a wholesome story to anyone new to Street Fighter, those who knew the lore immediately called out Capcom. In past games, it was always quite clear that Alex and Patricia saw each other as family. Alex was an orphan taken in by his mother’s cousin, Tom, which had him growing up as Patricia’s sibling. This means they aren’t actually brother and sister, but they’re still related as second cousins.

Capcom Reacts to Incest Backlash

Director Takayuki Nakayama eventually took to X (formerly Twitter) to address the “confusion” over Alex’s story. However, they also sorta confirmed that they are related – and devs are sticking to it.

“While we have not changed the characters’ backstories, after internal review by the development team, we plan to revise certain text passages that may have been misleading in the near future,” Nakayama tweeted. “Additionally, we have published a supplementary episode on ‘Buckler’s Boot Camp’ to provide further insight into the characters’ emotions and backstories.”

Yeah, it didn’t help. Called “A Toast Between Fathers,” this basically just confirmed that Alex and Patricia are adoptive siblings and second cousins. They just weren’t that close growing up, okay? It’s not that weird, alright?

As you can imagine, the response to the ongoing controversy has been… Weird. While most people seem to be concerned with the age gap and the whole being related thing, some gamers have some pretty doo-doo takes.

“Breaking news: Fighting games fans are so ridiculously stupid that they had to nerf the text behind a character’s backstory. Appealing to these Western fools is nonsense. How is it the devs’ fault that the education system and their parents failed them? That’s par for the course in America.”

Breaking news: Japan apparently loves incest and Americans should accept it? I would have to argue that incest isn’t part of Japanese culture.

Added another winner: “Don’t bow to the woke moralists!”

Breaking news: If you wouldn’t bang your second cousin, you’re woke! I mean, if she is hot and younger, does it really matter? WAKE UP, SHEEPLE!

For now, we will have to see if Capcom changes a few words somewhere, anywhere to further remove Alex and Patricia from each other. Because getting your second cousin turned sister pregnant? Yeah, that’s not it.
