FGC Fans Fuming as Capcom Cup Announces Pay Per View Plans

Capcom has landed itself in hot water with fans in the Fighting Game Community after announcing its plans to make the well-loved competition, the Capcom Cup, and the SFL: 2025 World Championship, pay-per-view.

The cost would be $40 for both competitions, with fans and competitive players alike speaking out about it.

As confirmed by Capcom Fighters, price points depend on your seating location in the venue, the pay-per-view prices for both events, and the combined cost if you plan to watch both events live. For those not interested in paying to watch the event, free replays will be available on March 21 and 22, a week after the event.

As the news about the event has spread, fans have taken to social media to express their disappointment with Capcom’s announcement, creating memes to share their feelings.

X user Boltstrike_ joked: “Me watching Capcom Cup on a re-stream on Periscope via YouTube on JustinTV because I’m not paying $40,” with a pixellated gif of Patrick from SpongeBob SquarePants.

A well-known X user named CatCammy6, known for posting Street Fighter 6 data and statistics, posted a year ago about how they wouldn’t be surprised if Capcom made the decision to make the event pay-per-view, and then reposted their own post to express their disappointment in their prediction.

Another user named gumius18 said that they would have preferred Capcom to create new stages, colours, and costumes, similar to what they did for Street Fighter V, rather than having the event stream cost $40 at the price point.

Sajam explained: “This is an extremely frustrating thing for them to announce. I think it’s insanely bad in basically every possible way.”

Japan’s Influence

Street Fighter 6 is incredibly popular in Japan, with much of its viewership and player base coming strictly from there. However, those in other countries and continents now fear that the success of Street Fighter 6 will drop significantly due to this decision.

This has led to multiple comments on various platforms urging international fans not to purchase pay-per-view tickets, as it could negatively affect the long-term state of the Capcom Cup.

FlyDragonFGC said, “I encourage everybody not to participate in this pay-per-view mess. If Capcom sees that they can profit from doing it they will continue doing it and other majors might start doing the same thing starting with EVO. This might change the FGC for better or for worse.”

It will be interesting to see what comes of the event, as the best Street Fighter players in the world take to the stage, and whether the pay-per-view model can set a new precedent not just in fighting games but across all of esports.
