Battlefield 2042’s Current Season Will Be Its Last As EA Moves On

Electronic Arts is preparing to move on from Battlefield 2042 and has confirmed that the current season – Season 7 – will be the game’s final major update. This latest update dropped halfway through March, bringing some top-tier new maps, modes, and weapons to the multiplayer-focused game, but all good things (good?) must come to an end. Battlefield 2042 might have started out life paltry, weak, and mostly hated, but it has grown to be regarded as at least a halfway decent Battlefield game.

For the last year or two, we’ve known that Electronic Arts’ studios are working on Battlefield 6 – or whatever it’ll be called. We’ve heard bold things from the CEO of the company stating that it’ll be a complete reimagination of the franchise, offering players a true next-generation experience. That’s all we do know, though. Everything from the game’s setting to the depth of the single-player campaign is being kept firmly under wraps.

 Bye-Bye Battlefield 2042

battlefield 2042 final season (1)

When Battlefield 2042 was released in 2021, it was to a substantially disappointed reception. Fans the world over were left shocked by how poorly built it was, with several fundamental features missing from the game and any kind of single-player content having been ripped clean out of the end product. It was ultimately turned around by DICE, but it left a dirty mark on the face of the franchise that won’t be cleaned off any time soon.

In a post on the EA website, the team confirmed that the current season will be the final major update for Battlefield 2042:

‘Season 7 will serve as the final season for Battlefield 2042. After Season 7 concludes, we will continue to support the game with new in-game challenges, events, modes, and of course, ongoing maintenance, but we are moving away from delivering official seasons. We know this news may be disappointing.  However, as we looked at what the future of the series required, it became clear it was time for us to shift our resources and focus to be fully dedicated to what comes next.’

Following that revelation, it was revealed that EA Motive, a studio responsible for the recent release of hte Dead Space remake, will be brought in to help out with Battlefield 6. There are a few studios engaged in this project, including DICE, Criterion, and Ripple Effect, making it one of the boldest development ecosystems for a Battlefield game ever. It was said that they’re ‘building a Battlefield universe across connected multiplayer experiences and single-player’.

As a lifelong Battlefield fan, this is nothing but good news to me. The series has faltered in recent years and needs a monumental boost. If Battlefield 2042 needs to be put to bed so that can happen faster, then I’m all for it. Bring it on.
