Final Fantasy XIII (13), released in 2009, was the first Final Fantasy release for the PS3, and the first title to also get simultaneous release on an Xbox console. Its combination of action RPG and turn-based elements made it a perfect entry point for new players and it wowed players with next-generation graphics. This meant it easily slipped into the list of top-selling Final Fantasy games. And beyond this, the sequel, XIII-2, sold 3.3 million units on top, making it one of the most successful of the FF sub games.

5. Final Fantasy XII – 7.71 million units

The last Final Fantasy game released on PS2 after the huge success of X, X-2, and MMO, XI, Final Fantasy XII is a love letter to the console that rocketed the series to massive success. Pushing the then six-year old hardware of the beloved console to the limit, XII did things that no one thought possible with the PS2. The game achieved perfect scores from many reviewers, and wowed with its “Gambit System” AI controlled party members.

4. Final Fantasy VIII – 9.6  million units

Final Fantasy was on a roll in the 90s, with the release of the universally beloved Final Fantasy VII in 1997. It followed it up with the equally ambitious Final Fantasy 8, a more science-fiction focused entry into the series that doubled down on the drama of its predecessor. Being the follow-up to one of the most beloved games in the series, it was naturally a best-seller, although fell short of its predecessor.

3. Final Fantasy XV – 10 million units

Final Fantasy games have always performed well on new platforms, and in 2016, Square Enix released their first non-MMO title on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Final Fantasy XV had wowed in its previews with its graphical fidelity, incredible visuals, and buddy road-trip theming. Naturally, the game sold tremendously and has continued to sell with its port to PC.

2. Final Fantasy VII – 14.1 million units

Final Fantasy VII is perhaps the most popular and beloved Final Fantasy game of all time. The story of Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, and the rest of the party has captured multiple generations of gamers, and has sparked multiple remakes and remasters. The sales figures here are just for the original VII version, and remaster, but not FFVII Remake, which also boast sales in the millions.

Final Fantasy X is the best selling game in the Final Fantasy series having sold a reported 21.1 million units globally as of 2022. That number has likely grown as the game’s remaster is still available for sale on Steam and Nintendo Switch. The numbers for Final Fantasy X and X-2 are sometimes lumped together as since 2016, the games were packaged together as a single remaster.

Still, Final Fantasy X is by far the most popular and best-selling mainline game and one of the most profitable ever endeavors for Square Enix. This likely comes from the timing of its release. The first new Final Fantasy game released on the PlayStation 2, still reigning as the best-selling console of all time. And it is one of the highest reviewed games of the series. All these factors combine to make it the best-selling Final Fantasy of all time.
