The 10 Best Souls-like Games, Ranked
Souls-likes are booming right now. FromSoftware has created a genre of its own with its Souls games and titles like Elden Ring, with plenty of other developers seeking to create a similar challenge in their games. To help you find the ones worth playing, we’ve put together a list of the 10 best Souls-like games, excluding titles developed by FromSoftware.

If you’re after a shorter Souls-like, Thymesia is right up your alley. This game does everything FromSoftware titles do, but in a smaller package meaning you won’t have to spend weeks trying to complete everything in Thymesia.
9. Ashen

If we’re talking about Souls-like games ranked by difficulty, then Ashen might not even make the list here. It’s not very difficult to learn the ropes here, but its strong visual aesthetic and unique co-op features make Ashen a unique addition to the Souls-like genre.

A Souls-like with guns? Sign us up. Remnant 2 has maybe the most unique combat of any Souls-like on this list, given how it combines guns with traditional melee combat. It even has great co-op integration, meaning you can experience all of Remnant 2 with a friend. A lot of the game’s dungeons are dynamically generated, too, making for a highly replayable title with some of the most fun boss fights of any Souls-like.
6. The Surge 2

The Surge 2 is for gamers who want a fresh take on the Souls-like genre. Its sci-fi theme ensures it feels unlike any other game on this list, as you fight your way through the ruins of Jericho. Its in-depth upgrade system means that you always feel like you’re progressing in The Surge 2, although the game does a great job of ensuring the challenge rises to match your progress.
5. Lords of the Fallen (2023)

2023’s Lords of the Fallen (not to be confused with the 2014 original of the same name) is a triumph of the Souls-like genre. Its visuals are so good it looks like a tech demo, and the combat is some of the most fluid the genre has to offer. That’s not to mention the enormous game world, which is a joy to explore. Lords of the Fallen is a true must-play for anyone looking for the best Souls-like games.
4. Salt and Sanctuary

When looking at Souls-like games ranked by difficulty, Salt and Sanctuary might not be near the top of the list. But looking at quality? Salt and Sanctuary is right up there. This 2D Souls-like combines fast-paced combat with complex RPG mechanics, alongside boss fights you won’t forget in a hurry. For our money, it’s the best 2D Souls-like game ever made.
3. Nioh 2

Nioh 2 features some of the most challenging combat of all the best Souls-like games. This adventure takes players across Japan to fight legions of yokai. The real highlight of Nioh 2 is its number of character builds, which makes the game perfect for multiple repeat playthroughs. For Souls-like fans, it’s an essential experience.
2. Lies of P

Lies of P is far better than it has any right to be. This Souls-like takes the classic story of Pinocchio, and blends it with a gothic steampunk aesthetic to create a game unlike any other. With challenging bosses and an engaging world to get lost in, Lies of P is one of the best Souls-like games ever made, and deserves to be celebrated as such.
1. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

The cream of the crop, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is, for our money, the very best Souls-like game not developed by FromSoftware. Respawn’s Souls-like takes players to a galaxy far, far away, following Jedi Knight Cal Kestis as he attempts to survive the wrath of the Galactic Empire. Challenging and rewarding all the same, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is everything the best Souls-like games should be.
