What is the Borderlands 4 Release Date?
Gearbox has confirmed that Borderlands 4 will launch on September 12, 2025. Originally planned for September 23, the release was moved up by 11 days; an unusual but welcome surprise in a world full of delays.
Borderlands 4 is set to drop on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 all at once on release date, so no one’s getting left behind this time.

What’s New in Borderlands 4?
Set on a brand-new planet called Kairos, Borderlands 4 introduces a fresh villain known as the Timekeeper – a cyber-enhanced tyrant who’s kept the planet hidden for centuries. The gameplay footage teased one of Kairos’ regions called Terminus Range, a frozen, loot-packed wasteland that looks equal parts deadly and rewarding.
We’ve also met two of the four new Vault Hunters:
- Vex, a Siren with spectral powers and strong elemental attacks.
- Rafa, an ex-Tediore soldier rocking an experimental exo-suit that spawns weapons mid-fight.
Gearbox says this is the most customizable Borderlands yet, with deeper skill trees and a load of new systems.
- The new Licensed Parts mechanic lets players combine traits from different gun manufacturers to build their dream weapon – think explosive Torgue firepower with Hyperion accuracy. There’s also a new Enhancements slot for tweaking gear, and Rep Kits that provide quick buffs or heals when you’re in a pinch.
- Grenades and heavy weapons are now rolled into a single Ordnance slot with a cooldown system, meaning no more hoarding ammo or worrying about your loadout mid-fight.
- Co-op play has been upgraded, too. The new Buddy System allows for seamless drop-in/drop-out multiplayer with level scaling, instanced loot, and player-specific difficulty settings – great whether you’re solo or rolling with friends.
Is Borderlands 4 Really Worth $80?
Recently, Gearbox’s CEO, Randy Pitchford, stirred the pot on X. When a user voiced concerns about Borderlands 4 possibly costing $80 (a price tag that hasn’t been confirmed), Pitchford responded in his usual enthusiastic, but slightly offbeat way. He made it clear that the price isn’t his decision alone – there’s a lot more at play behind the scenes with Gearbox and 2K.
If you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen. My local game store had Starflight for Sega Genesis for $80 in 1991, when I was just out of high school, working minimum wage at an ice cream parlor in Pismo Beach, and I found a way to make it happen.
Now, while that might resonate with some, it’s a bit of an awkward moment for others. The truth is, $80 for a game is a hefty price, especially with the state of the economy and how many players are struggling. So, while Pitchford’s passion for the series is clear, it might be time to rethink the “real fan” approach, especially when we still don’t even know what the final price will be.

Final Thoughts
Overall, Borderlands 4 looks like it’s going to be another wild, loot-filled ride with a fresh setting, exciting new Vault Hunters, and plenty of improvements to keep the gameplay fun and interesting.
Yeah, we get it – $80 games might just be around the corner at this point, with inflation, tariffs, and the rising cost of development all piling up. But that doesn’t make it any easier to accept, especially for fans who’ve been with the series since the start and are already feeling the financial squeeze. Passion’s great, but accessibility matters too. If studios want us to keep showing up, they’ve got to meet players halfway.
Still, price tag aside, the Borderlands 4 release date is just right around the corner, and September 12 can’t come soon enough.
