Days Gone’s Creator Had Plans For a Sequel Before It Was Canned
Days Gone was released exclusively on PlayStation 4 in 2019, emerging as a top-tier open-world zombie apocalypse title with more than a few twists and innovations. It was fronted by Deacon St. John, a badass biker and man of the people charged with locating his lost wife in a world torn apart by the undead. With intense horde mechanics, great motorcycle physics, and a lengthy, twisting story, Days Gone was a hit with players – but Sony canned any hope of a follow-up game.
Despite Days Gone ending with plenty of cards still on the table, it was determined that Bend Studio wouldn’t work on Days Gone 2. Much to the chagrin of the game’s fans, this meant that a giant hole would be left in St. John’s story, leaving vast elements of the universe open to interpretation. The game’s creator, John Garvin, recently stressed that he spent weeks working on the sequel before it was shut down and that he has a ‘script, outline, map, and concept art’ just sitting around.
What Might Have Been
Days Gone is widely regarded as one of the best zombie apocalypse games ever. It’s a beautiful yet harrowing title that sees players start their journey with nothing. They have minimal weapons and few skills, and even their motorcycle is a shell that must be built on and upgraded over time. In the many hours of content that the game offers, players will traverse a huge map, forge relationships with settlements, and try to rid much of the world of the undead menace personified by ‘Freakers’ of various shapes and sizes.
It’s a great game with a twisting narrative that sees players wrestle with the frustration of desperately searching for someone they believe is alive – but can’t prove it. As the game unravels, players find themselves battling against both human and undead enemies, dealing with all the tropes of a post-apocalyptic world, including cults, bandits, and a harsh environment.
In a post on Twitter, John Garvin explained that he’d put work into fleshing out a follow-up title to Days Gone. However, he departed Bend Studio before the sequel was ultimately shut down, leaving the franchise abandoned. He also mentioned that there were intentions to create a trilogy out of Days Gone, surpassing a two-piece and moving on to three games that were interlinked. With the team having created a vast and innovative universe in Days Gone, it’s easy to see how that would have been possible.
Never Going To Happen
Unfortunately, it was confirmed recently that Sony’s executives simply weren’t happy with Days Gone. That’s one of the leading reasons why a follow-up title won’t ever surface. When Days Gone was released, it suffered from some bugs and performance issues, but these were ironed out relatively quickly by the developers at Bend Studio. It wasn’t enough, though – despite a decent following at launch, Days Gone withered and disappeared relatively quickly, even if it was (and still is) an utterly fantastic zombie apocalypse title.
