What is Deathroot?
Deathroot is a unique quest item found in different parts of the Lands Between. Its a collectible item for trade with one of the game’s NPCs, the fearsome wolf-man, Gurranq, the Beast Clergyman. Finding Deathroot in Elden Ring
Deathroot locations are typically tied to mini-bosses known as Tibia Mariner. These skeletal navigators appear in several specific areas, always near bodies of water. Defeating a Tibia Mariner not only progresses various world events but also rewards you with a piece of Deathroot. Here are the 9 locations of the Deathroot boss fights:
- Limgrave, kill Tibia Mariner at Summonwater Village
- Limgrave, chest behind the Black Knife Assassin in the Deathtouched Catacombs.
- Liurnia of the Lakes, kill Tibia Mariner at East Liurnia of the Lakes.
- Liurnia of the Lakes, chest behind the Cemetery Shade in the Black Knife Catacombs.
- Altus Plateau, kill Tibia Mariner at Wyndham Ruins.
- Altus Plateau, chest behind the Red Wolf of the Champion at Gelmir Hero’s Grave.
- Mountaintops of the Giants. Kill Tibia Mariner on a ledge between Castle Sol Main Gate and Snow Valley Ruins Overlook.
- Mountaintops of the Giants. In the chest after defeating the Stray Mimic Tear in the secret catacombs underneath the Hidden Path to the Haligtree.
- Mountaintops of the Giants, chest after defeating the Ulcerated Tree Spirit boss inside the Giants’ Mountaintop Catacombs.
Once you have obtained a Deathroot, your next step is to visit Gurranq, in the Bestial Sanctum. You’ll find it in Caelid, at the northeastern part of the map, near the Siofra River. After you talk to the Beast Clergyman and give the Deathroot to Gurranq, he will consume it. Depending on how many he’s consumed, he gives you Beast Eye spells or Ashes of War. While the Beast Eye spells may not be usable to everyone, Ashes of War are always good for respeccing your weapons.

Tibia Mariner, Summonwater village – Source | FromSoftware
- Be Prepared for Battle: Tibia Mariner fights can be challenging, especially for newer players. You should approach each one with the preparation you’d do for any FromSoftware boss fight. We’ve listed the Summonwater Village Tibia Mariner first, as it is widely considered the easiest one to beat.
- But like, actually though: The remaining Deathroot sources are locked behind chests found after fighting other bosses. Even if you’re not fighting Tibia Mariner, you’re in for a fight.
- Convenience vs Lore: You can collect multiple Deathroots at once. However, if you hand over multiple to Gurranq, you’ll skip lore segments. After the 4th root, you’ll need to walk away and rest to trigger an event. After the event resolution, you claim the rewards.
Knowing where to find Deathroot is only half the battle. Through trading, you can turn a simple root into a significant advantage against the myriad threats of the Lands Between. Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or a newcomer to Elden Ring, the pursuit of Deathroot is worth the effort.
