Fallout 76 Hits Highest-Ever Peak Player Count on Steam

It might be a morbid, post-apocalyptic series, but the world is in love with Fallout right now. Following the release of the Fallout TV show, several things happened to drive the hype train further for the Bethesda-backed franchise. First, the Fallout 4 next-gen update was given a date after more than two years of waiting. Then, a free-play weekend kicked off for Fallout 76, Bethesda Game Studios’ online offering set in the nuclear-annihilated universe of Fallout.

In that melting pot, Fallout has discovered newfound senses of purpose and popularity. Today, Fallout 76 soared on Steam, scoring an all-time-high peak player count – the highest ever seen on the platform – and it’s not slowing down. Previously, the record was set at 32,982 players, and that was achieved in 2020. Today, the player count soared to 37,523 amid the Fallout craze that’s taking over the gaming world.

Fallout 76 is a rags-to-riches story that’s a wonder to tell. It started in a terrible state, being hated by most of the series’ community owing to how empty and bland it felt. It suffered for around a year, and then the gears started turning. Bethesda Game Studios poured updates into the ecosystem, fleshing out the game and introducing countless injections of content that made Fallout 76 feel much more alive.

By today, Fallout 76 is a brilliant MMO and well worth a play – especially during this limited-time, free-play weekend that Bethesda Game Studios is hosting. It’s a fan-favourite title that has pulled in millions of players, and despite there still being claims that it’s ‘not a real Fallout game’, it’s doing a fantastic job of holding up the future of the franchise on its shoulders. All that needs to happen now is for Fallout 76 crossplay mechanics to be introduced!

Just look at the growth that was recorded today, it’s staggering:

Even during the last free-to-play week in October, Fallout 76 only managed to climb around 6,000 – 7,000 in peak players. This is all owed to the success of the Fallout TV show, which debuted this week to a monumental reception, pulling in top-tier reviews across the board. That, combined with the revelation that the Fallout 4 next-gen update is dropping soon, is enough to generate a huge amount of traffic for the franchise on social, streaming, and gaming platforms.
