Fallout Frenzy Continues As Player Counts Soar
On April 10, the Fallout TV show was released on Prime Video. It was received so well that it caused ripples across the gaming industry, with millions of players suddenly downloading and buying Fallout games – some for the first time. What followed was a remarkable spree of growth and popularity, with the most recent Fallout games seeing massive player spikes, setting new records and pushing the franchise back into the charts for the first time in years.
It has now been almost two weeks since the Fallout show was released, and that frenzy hasn’t slowed down. If anything, it has picked up pace, with the likes of Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 seeing huge numbers on gaming and streaming platforms worldwide. The Fallout community is revelling in this growth, as thousands of brand-new players make their way into a remarkably welcoming ecosystem, considering it’s based on a post-apocalyptic, morbid franchise.
Atomic Impact
On Fallout 76 (2018) – which is now proving to be a great game – player numbers have swollen to levels never before seen. On Steam, the game hit a peak player count of 63,707 users, which is the highest it has been ever. To put that into perspective, the highest peak player count ever tracked for Fallout 76 on Steam was 21,931. On streaming platforms like Twitch, Fallout 76 is soaring up the charts, sitting in a position that’s more prolific and prestigious than ever.
Fallout 4 (2015) is also experiencing a huge boom, with the game sliding into the top ten games on Steam by player count. It is beating the likes of Grand Theft Auto 5, Destiny 2, and Baldur’s Gate 3 at the time of writing, which is incredible when you consider the game is almost a decade old. It’s not expected that it’ll hit a new all-time high, as that number is floating around half a million players, but it has a 24-hour peak of 141,095 users, which is pretty insane.
Multimedia Success
The Fallout TV show has brought millions of new eyes to this legendary franchise. In 1997, the first Fallout game was released, but it wasn’t until 2008 that the series gained mainstream popularity, with Bethesda Game Studios picking up, developing, and releasing Fallout 3. In 2015, Fallout 4 became the best-selling title in the series, with Bethesda making it the most accessible and ‘simple’ Fallout game on record.
Then, in 2018, Fallout 76 debuted as the series’ first multiplayer-only game. It took a long time, but thanks to the multimedia success of the franchise, Fallout 76 is now getting the recognition that it deserves. That brings us full circle to today, and unfortunately, nobody knows what Fallout 5 – or whatever the next game will be called – will look like. It’ll be a whole new world, but before that game arrives, fans will be able to enjoy a second – and perhaps third – season of the television show.
