Final Fantasy XIV Director Confirms He Isn’t Working on FFIX Remake

Final Fantasy XIV’s director and lead producer Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida has confirmed that his Square Enix department, Creative Studio III, isn’t the team working on the Final Fantasy IX Remake. The noted project lead also revealed if he was working on FFIX, he’d make sure it was a turn-based game rather than an action game like modern Final Fantasy titles.

The reveals came as Yoshida hosted the June 14 FFXIV Live Letter, a livestream that gave details about the upcoming Dawntrail expansion. During the opening portion of the stream, Yoshi-P and community producer Toshio “Foxclon” Murouchi answered off-the-cuff questions from chat.

In response to a question about the now leaked FFIX Remake, Yoshi-P confirmed his department wasn’t working on it, but if he some ideas if he was ever put in charge. Primarily to keep it a turn-based game.

If we were remaking FFIX people would complain we’d turn it into an action game. But I’d make it turn-based.” – Yoshida on FFIX Remake

This may be sad news for some fans of the FFXIV producer and director, who has been widely praised as the savior of the once beleaguered MMO. Seen as one of the biggest turn-arounds in gaming, FFXIV launched in 2010 to disappointing reviews. But a relaunch in 2013 changed the favors of the game which has since gone on to become one of the most popular and well-regarded MMOs of all time.

Yoshida was also the producer and director behind Final Fantasy XVI, which has been a critical success. The award-winning title was seen a worth addition to the storied franchise.

The rumors about the FFIX remake being made by Yoshida’s Creative Studio III flared after the game was seemingly leaked earlier this week. On Monday, a new Epic Games Store database website apparently revealed the existence of the FFIX Remake, as well as a FFXVI PC port. That website has subsequently gone offline.

Still, this is yet more confirmation that a FFIX Remake is in the works, and it will likely not be another action game. This will be pleasing for some fans, who were disappointed at the action game treatment that the FFVII remake games have received. Hopefully, loyal Final Fantasy fans won’t be disappointed when the remake is official announced.
