Yoshi-P Reveals Upcoming Job Changes For FFXIV: Dawntrail
While FFXIV’s latest expansion, Dawntrail, is only fresh out of the gates, game director and lead producer Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida wants players to know there’s job changes on the horizon. In a post released on July 4, Yoshida identified a plethora of changes to jobs and roles as a whole, indicating things would change for both the 7.01 and 7.05 patches.
While some of these job changes were minor, others seem to revamp the way the classes work, particularly the new ones to Monk, Astrologian, and new job Viper.

The Monk, it seems, was completely botched on release. With the changes to Fury, apparently incorrectly implemented, the Monk felt weak on Dawntrail’s release. Yoshi-P even directly apologized to Monk players, so you know it was bad. Monk is getting fixed, and Monk players can go back to working harder for their DPS than any other class in the game.
Astrologian is getting a buff to its damage by giving them extra charges of Light Speed. This means in a pinch, the Astro will be able to quickly spam abilities, whether that be damage, or healing. But if you’re using Light Speed for healing, things have likely already gone very wrong.
The Viper, too, is subject to changes although they’re not coming until 7.05. The Viper’s rotation, it seems, is just a bit “busy.” That’s developer talk for “needlessly complicated.” The Viper is a fun class, but with the adjustments to directional abilities, it’ll feel like less of a chore to maximize DPS.
Other classes getting tweaks are Black Mages, (who were struggling to regain MP) all tanks, who’ll be getting increased enmity on AoE abilities to counter the fact almost every class can now open up with a huge DPS attack, and Red Mage and Samurai, who are receiving minor tweaks.

These changes are nearly universally positive, except for this author and FFXIV fanatic, who worries that the Samurai changes will neuter his job even more, pushing the Melee DPS job down the DPS meter.
Still, it’s clear how closely Square Enix and the Creative Business Unit III team are following Dawntrail. For class balance changes to be announced, and come out two weeks after release, represents a very quick turn around. FFXIV: Dawntrail has launched to mixed reviews, but overall, the gameplay has been very enjoyable. These job changes will hopefully keep the FFXIV enjoyability intact for even more players throughout Dawntrail.
