Firewalk Explains How Monetisation Works in Concord

Concord was recently revealed as a high-octane hero shooter destined to land on PlayStation 5 and PC in August. It’s set to compete with the likes of Overwatch 2, bringing players a fantastic line-up of combatants called Freegunners that they can utilise in a string of traditional multiplayer modes. It’s not a free-to-play shooter, though – it has a price point of around $40, which Firewalk Studios, the game’s developer, feels is more than justified for the amount of content in the game at launch.

However, that’s not the be-all and end-all of the monetisation structure for Concord. Firewalk Studios recently spoke about the post-launch deliverables that will see players exchange real-world money for cosmetics and other items – which is how things have worked in games for years. Ultimately, the starting package for Concord is substantial, but as this is a live service game, there will be much more to buy as time goes on.

Money Matters

At launch, Concord will feature a whopping 16 characters, all with unique abilities and skills, plus 12 maps and six game modes. That’s a serious offering, but it was confirmed by Firewalk Studios that it goes much deeper. Post-launch, every season will feature a sizeable update with free content – including more maps, weapons, characters, and modes. It’s typical for a multiplayer shooter, and it’s what we were expecting.

In a recent interview, it was further explained how monetisation will work:

‘There’s additional cosmetic-only customisation options where you can further personalise your characters’ looks – this isn’t gameplay, this is only cosmetic – that you can purchase, and that will come out seasonally as well.’

Concord will be a cross-platform game when it’s released towards the end of August. In July, a beta phase will unravel, with players being invited across two weekends to explore a fair chunk of what the game offers. Regardless of the platform you’re playing on, you’ll need a PSN account, which has been the subject of debate recently as it’s a relatively newly introduced feature.
