The next title in the Gears of War series has been revealed: E-Day. With a fresh trailer to showcase this brand-new game, The Coalition unveiled the next adventure in the franchise, confirming that we’re set to go back in time to the beginning of the storyline. In E-Day, players will get to explore the events of ‘Emergence Day’, which in the Gears of War universe is where the dramatic events that led to the end of the world started to unfold.
With just a few minutes on-screen, the trailer for Gears of War E-Day doesn’t reveal much – but it’s enough. It has been five years since the last Gears of War title surfaced, and fans are hungry for more. In E-Day, the prospect of going back to the chronological beginning of the GoW timeline is hugely exciting – and a little emotional. That’s the sentiment relayed in the trailer released to showcase the game, which you can watch below.
In an article published on the Xbox News site, it was confirmed that E-Day plays out from the perspective of Marcus Fenix. As one of the most iconic characters in gaming history, Fenix enjoys a prestigious spot in the hall of fame, and for the first time in years, players will get to control him once again. From Gears of War to Gears of War 3, Marcus Fenix was the series protagonist, and gamers came to form a bond with the character, expertly acted by John DiMaggio.
Gears of War: E-Day has been painstakingly crafted in Unreal Engine 5. It’ll tell the story of the rise of the Locust, the subterranean enemy faction in the Gears of War universe that’s hellbent on the destruction of the human race. Through the eyes of a young Dom Santiago and Marcus Fenix, players will explore Sera and fight desperately against the rising threat. Players with experience in the series will know how this game must end, though…

In a statement, the creative director of E-Day, Matt Searcy, explained why this was the destination of choice for a new Gears of War game:
‘We realized that a lot of the words we use to describe the franchise were what our fans also use, phrases like brotherhood, brutality, pathos, awe. Why E-Day? That’s the moment it all comes together. It’s the heart of the Gears universe. Everything that happens is shaped by this day.’
Despite revisiting a much earlier point in the timeline, it has been promised that Gears of War: E-Day will feel like a ‘new Gears game’. It’s set around 14 years before the events of Gears of War (2006), and it’ll see players battle hauntingly familiar enemies but at the same time unique and fresh. It was said that E-Day will be a ‘story of many origins’, with players getting the chance to learn how much of the universe came to be.
It hasn’t been confirmed when Gears of War: E-Day will be released, but the expectation is that it’ll drop towards the end of 2025.
