With the launch of the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, players are discovering a new slate of difficult bosses to fight. Like all FromSoftware bosses before it, each comes with their own unique quirks and challenges, that make them tough to beat. We’re here to help, this time with Commander Gaius.
If you’re stuck on how to beat Commander Gaius in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, hopefully, we’ve got a few tips that can help.

You’ll encounter Commander Gaius at the very end of the Shadow Keep Legacy Dungeon. If you can’t find him, don’t worry. You can come back and fight him after beating the other bosses in the dungeon, Messmer the Impaler, and the Scadutree Avatar.

Commander Gaius fights atop a giant boar, but you shouldn’t try and match him with Torrent. You’ll have a lot more success here on your feet, as his rush attacks aren’t too difficult to dodge. While dodging, try to get attacks off onto his side and back – that’s where you’ll deal consistent damage.
We’ve said it a few times already in our Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree boss guides, but Mimic Tear Ashes are essential if you really want to cheese this fight. You’ll have to use them instantly though, as Commander Gaius will charge you as soon as you enter the boss area. If you can manage to use them, the boss will be much less focused on you.
If you have it from the base game, try and use the Rivers of Blood Katana against Commander Gaius. It seems to be extremely efficient at bringing down this particular boss in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. Just keep rolling around his attacks and you’ll be totally fine to beat Commander Gaius.
