Much like Commander Gaius, Messmer the Impaler is located in the Shadow Keep. Specifically, the Specimen Storehouse, which is in the northwestern area of the Shadow Keep. You’ll know you’re nearby when you reach the Dark Chamber Entrance Site of Grace. You don’t necessarily have to beat this boss before or after Commander Gaius – it’s totally up to you which one to tackle first.

The villain on the key art for Shadow of the Erdtree turns out to be a tough boss battle? Color us shocked. This fight is all about preparation, so make sure you’re stocked up on Scadutree Fragments before taking on Messmer the Impaler. He deals a ton of Fire damage, so you need to make sure you activate any Talismans that give you Fire Resistance.

When it comes to the Messmer the Impaler fight itself, utilize any type of Frostbite damage you can. These seem to be a weakness of his, and will cause some serious problems if you can stack it up. We’d combine this with Mimic Tear Ashes to give yourself a buffer to deal more hits to the boss, and makes it easier to avoid his Leaping Fire Ball attack, which can be a deadly one-hit kill. You’ll also find some success with Bleed damage against Messmer the Impaler, so something like Rivers of Blood could also be effective if you feel comfortable getting close.
