How to Make an Anvil in Minecraft

If you’re going to make it deep into the game, you’re going to need to know how to make an anvil in Minecraft. This is one of the most important blocks you can have, as it is used to enchant, rename, and repair key items.

Getting that perfect sword or repairing a near-broken trident would be impossible without an anvil. Fortunately, it’s not that hard to make but it can be a costly craft. Here’s what you need to know.

How to Make an Anvil in Minecraft

To make an anvil in Minecraft, you must have a lot of iron.

You will, in total, need 39 ingots. Three ingots remain in ingot form, but the other 36 must be turned into blocks.

That’s likely the hardest part and once you’ve collected all your iron, actually making the anvil is pretty straightforward. Simply place the three blocks and three ingots into a crafting table to produce one anvil. It’s worth noting that the crafter is a little different in update 1.12 so you might need to figure out how to use the crafter too!

You can then place it down and use it to enchant, rename, or repair items. The block will not last forever, though. Other blocks, like the crafting table, cauldron, grindstone, and more do not have an expiration, but an anvil does.

With every single use of an anvil, there is a 12% chance that it becomes damaged. There are levels to this and each use has a chance to drop it one level. The levels are:

  • Chipped
  • Damaged
  • Destroyed

These do not happen that quickly, though. It’s extremely rare for you to destroy an anvil in three tries. They usually last much longer. You will see the deterioration as each level looks much worse than the last. Ironically, you cannot repair it. You can use an anvil to repair a Diamond Sword, but the anvil itself will have to be destroyed and then crafted again to “fix” it.
