With the release of FFXIV: Dawntrail, a new item slot appeared in all player’s character, the Facewear slot. This slow allows players to don visual-only elements such as glasses, masks, and other coverings.
However, it’s not immediately obvious how to unlock this slot, and selecting it yields only the error message “Unable to display. This feature is yet to be unlocked.” So how do you unlock facewear in FFXIV? Here’s the answer.

To unlock the Facewear slot in FFXIV all you need to do is obtain some Facewear. The Dawntrail Main Scenario Quest has some opportunities for this, but the easiest way is if you already owned some glasses or spectacles as Fashion Accessories prior to the release of Dawntrail.

If that’s the case, all you’ll need to do is head to one of the Calamity Salvagers, and select the Spectacles Exchange. This will convert any previous spectacle and glasses Fashion Accessories into Facewear. Then you’ll be able to select the Facewear from your Character Menu, or the dedicated Facewear Menu.

Facewear is customizable in color and tint via the Facewear menu. Once you have the Facewear you want, click and drag it to the slot and you’ll have it equipped. Facewear will be visible in cutscenes and battle, but may not be visible for all players.
At the start of Dawntrail, only a few options for spectacles existed as Facewear. But as the expansion continues, WoLs will have the opportunity to unlock plenty of other options, from masks to full face coverings, customizing their character as they wish.
