Level Zero: Extraction is Escape from Tarkov Meets ‘Alien’
Just when you thought there were enough extraction shooters on the market, along comes Level Zero: Extraction. This ambitious, horror-themed extraction shooter is in an open beta phase right now, offering players the chance to explore a game that’s effectively Tarkov crossed with Alien. There’s a huge twist in Level Zero, though – you can assume control of an alien being that’s terrorising players, taking on a completely different perspective from any game out there.
It’s a typical extraction shooter elsewhere, with players needing to enter a raid, loot and fight other players and AI-driven enemies, and escape from the map without succumbing to a violent death. That’s the core gameplay loop, and it’s present in every extraction shooter out there. In the last few months, more extraction shooters than ever before have surfaced, with the genre growing immeasurably in popularity over time. Will Level Zero: Extraction be the next best bet at toppling Tarkov from the top spot?
Introducing Level Zero: Extraction
Penned as being an extraction horror game with tactical FPS combat, Level Zero: Extraction offers a solid alternative to the traditional milsim-style combat found in this genre. The likes of Escape from Tarkov, Arena Breakout: Infinite, and Gray Zone Warfare have plenty to offer – but they don’t offer horror. That’s where Level Zero: Extraction comes in, presenting the player with jumpscares galore as they’re hunted by a vicious, ferocious alien monster.
It’s planned for release this year, but it’s in an open beta period now. As we speak, players are getting to grips with an ecosystem that’s bursting at the seams with hazards and threats. In teams of up to three users, competitors enter the battlefield equipped with whatever they want to bring, and the core goal is to survive. It’s a highly customisable game, which in theory means that no two fights ever have to be the same – but metas are surfacing, of course.
As this is a sci-fi title of sorts, there are plenty of futuristic elements to enjoy. Players can augment themselves with ‘neural implants’, and some of the weapons found in the game are prototypes by nature, built off the back of concepts that are rooted in a futuristic setting. Another unique element is that the game’s alien-based enemies can only be weakened and fought properly with light, so using flashlights, flares, and fire is paramount to your success, which brings about an Alan Wake vibe.
It’s a relatively simple game to run, which means that even an average PC should be able to try it out, but it’s not expected to be released on anything other than PC. If you’re interested, you can find the game on Steam and enrol to take part in the open beta.
