Major Nelson Reveals His Next Job In The Games Industry
Larry ‘Major Nelson’ Hryb was once one of the most recognisable faces in gaming. He spent many years fronting Xbox and Microsoft, standing firm as a prolific personality that many considered the personification of the ‘Team Green’ brand of gaming. In 2023, Hryb announced he was leaving Xbox after two decades at the firm, opting to pursue other projects – but he remained firmly connected to the games industry.
Now, the legend himself has revealed what’s next for him in the wider gaming market. He’s stepping into a role in the Community team at Unity, stressing that he’ll be collaborating ‘again with developers, harnessing our collective creativity to shape the future of real-time gaming and experiences.’
Recovering Unity
Last year, Unity found itself in very hot water after revealing a new pricing structure that threatened small developers worldwide. It planned to implement a new pricing process that would see developers charged based on the number of downloads their game has. It was effectively a plan that would have ‘punished’ small developers for their success, and it was a far step away from the existing model that had made Unity so popular with indie developers and publishers.
That news came mere months after Unity underwent a massive downsizing, releasing more than 600 employees and shutting down a whopping 28 offices worldwide. Following a year of bad news, many felt that Unity couldn’t possibly recover, after forever marring its public image.
Perhaps that’s where Larry Hryb comes into the picture.
As a likeable, impressionable, and confident persona in the gaming space, Major Nelson was always on the screens of gamers worldwide. He was the face of Xbox for several years, presenting shows, appearing in trailers and at expos, and generally being a popular person on social media platforms and online publications. His voice is a tried and trusted one in gaming, and for years he served as a solid advocate for developers everywhere.
Will signing Major Nelson to the team improve Unity’s outlook?
