NetEase Layoffs Part Of Marvel Rivals Development Team Amidst Successful Launch

The gaming industry is full of uncertainties. The recent layoffs at NetEase are a stark example of how even when you have developed one of the best games of the year, your team is still not safe. Thaddeus Sasser, the Game Director at NetEase Games, took to LinkedIn to inform players and game enthusiasts that his Marvel Rivals team had been laid off.

Marvel Rivals Team Laid Off

In a detailed LinkedIn post, Thaddeus Sasser said that his “stellar, talented team” was “just laid off!” Marvel Rivals was just recovering from the mid-season rank reset backlash as this news broke out. The game is doing fairly well since it touched 20 million players in its first month of release. For now, they have over 300,000 concurrent players. That still didn’t affect NetEase bosses’ decision.

Several other members of the team who were laid off also took to LinkedIn to express their views about the whole situation. Designer Garry McGee said:

“Hello, hello! As the old saying goes, “All good things must come to an end.” My team recently helped develop and launch Marvel Rivals, which turned out to be a bigger hit than any of us expected! Unfortunately, my team was also laid off.”

This is not the only response to the situation and another designer, Jack Burrows wrote:

“Welp, just got laid off from my job working on Marvel Rivals with NetEase… Just couldn’t dodge that big boot I guess, no matter how big the success of the gig.”

NetEase has yet to comment on why the team was laid off and what the future holds for the game. For now, the game is not affected by the lay offs and is running smoothly with Season 1 half way update. Season 1’s second half was released just a few days back and has also released new characters: The Thing and The Human Torch in the game.
