Will there be a Portal 3 Release Date?

If you’re like me, and many other gamers, you’re probably itching for any news about a Portal 3 release date. It’s time to put down the copium dive into what we actually know, and what we can speculate about the next installment in this beloved series.

Portal 3 Release Date

There have been whispers and hints about Valve working on multiple projects. The recurring joke of course is that Valve don’t know how to count to 3. Many of their groundbreaking titles languishing with just a single sequel, or a prequel. TF2 has only just recovered from its massive bot problem, thanks to the #SaveTF2 playerbase movement.

However, while nothing official has been said about Portal 3, Gabe Newell’s comments about new games in development have kept the hope alive.

Currently, it is said that they have been working on a new IP, however, games like Half Life: Alyx show that Valve aren’t completely letting their hallmark franchises gather dust. But, Portal 3 has no release date. As of writing, they haven’t even formally announced it.

What about a spin off?

We know that Valve are taking their time with game releases. With Portal 2 coming out over a decade ago, fans have been eagerly waiting for any hint of Portal 3. Valve’s pattern suggests that they like to surprise us, so who knows when they might drop the next bombshell?

With the success of Half-Life: Alyx and Valve’s focus on VR, it’s exciting to think about what Portal 3 could look like with the latest technology.

VR is starting to take more of a forefront in gaming, featuring alongside huge title showcases in things like Sony’s State of Play. Valve tends to be known for PC games, but they have launched their titles on consoles. With Portal featuring in the Orange Box collection, and Portal 2 being on even the Nintendo Switch. Dota 2, of course, continues to see frequent updates like the Crownfall Collectors’ Cache as it leads the pack on esports earnings.

What do I do in the meantime?

The Portal fan base is as passionate as ever. The constant buzz and fan theories keep the dream alive. For now, workshop maps are a great way to scratch that new Portal level itch, and the game has some fantastic speedruns to experience the game in a whole new light.

While there’s no official release date for Portal 3 yet, the speculation is real. With Valve’s history, the community’s passion, and the potential for cutting-edge technology, we can only hope that Portal 3 is on the horizon.
