PS6 Release Date | Here’s what we know about the PS6 so far

The PlayStation 5 is the current powerhouse console to beat but there are already talks about a PS6 release date. The PS5 is already over 4 years into its lifespan. Due to short supply and scalping during the lockdowns a few years back, it’s not seen as widespread adoption as Sony hoped. Especially with such a high price tag!

Here’s what we know about when we might see a potential PlayStation 6 release date.

PS6 Release Date

At the time of writing, there’s absolutely nothing certain about the release date of the PS6. However, Sony has stated that the PS5 is “entering the latter stages of its cycle.” This led to a lot of speculation on how long was left for the PlayStation 5.

On paper, PS5 has been on shelves since November 2020, but in reality, it is still out of the hands of many of its would-be players. There are even plenty of high-profile games still being released for the PlayStation 4, such is the generational divide.

Even events, such as EVO 2024, which is sponsored by Sony, one of the biggest fighting game events of the year, has struggled to make the transition from PS4 to PS5. And that issue is compounded at lower level fighting game events, where community console sourcing is the lifeblood of the scene.

Is there a leaked PS6 release date?

The only thing we definitely do know about the PS6 release date comes from former Sony veteran Shuhei Yoshida, who left the company in 2025. In an interview in early 2025, he stated that a 2027 release date was “a bit too early” for the PS6, while 2028 would “feel right.” That would mark eight years between consoles, which would be the biggest gap in Sony’s history.

It should also be pointed out that Yoshida’s comments were merely speculation on his behalf. There’s no guarantee that Sony is aiming for a 2028 PlayStation 6 release date, and it’s possible it could still arrive before this. Anything beyond 2028 would admittedly be pretty surprising.

When the PS6 release date does arrive, hopefully, it will have ample supply for all gamers. The PS5 generation was undoubtedly hamstrung from the start, with gamers taking years to get their hands on the console. A repeat of that would be pretty disastrous.

Sony’s Release Pattern

Sony typically rolls out a new console every 6-7 years. Since the PS5 launched in November 2020, if they were on track to do the same again, we could expect the PS6 around 2027-2028. However, jumps in technology between console generations are starting to diminish. There is still plenty of room for developers to make more use of current console generation hardware.

Every new Sony console brings cutting-edge tech. The State of Play continues to show off new installments in powerhouse genres, as well as breathtaking experiences from indie devs and upcoming studios.

Notably, many Sony games focus on the “cinematic experience” their jaw-dropping visuals can provide, showcasing its fair share of VR titles being pushed to the forefront. The PS5 is slowly becoming an ecosystem, with various add-on products to enhance your gameplay variety.

While it’s still early, the PS6 is likely on the horizon, potentially arriving around 2028. Stay tuned for more updates from Sony.

Meanwhile, enjoy your PS5 and get excited for what’s next in gaming!
